12  little house on the prairie costumes in Costumes: Completed Projects by Mary Bell on: January 19, 2007 03:09:59 PM
for my girls as Christmas gifts

My oldest daughter's costume is pretty authentic  - I personally love the bonnet.

It has something crazy like eleven buttons down the front. Fortunately, I didn't have too many problems with the button holes.

My youngest daughter doesn't like wearing her bonnet even thought it is adorable being the same fabric as her dress.

Her costume isn't so terribly authentic and rather reminds me of Heidi.

for those so inclined there are more photos of them here: http://thosenorthernskies.blogspot.com/2006/12/o-pioneers.html on my blog.

13  teeny tiny folded purses in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by Mary Bell on: October 26, 2006 12:59:10 PM
This is a little purse that I made myself last summer - it is just the right size for my credit card wallet...if I had a cell phone it would be great for a phone bag.

This little purse is a gift for my SIL. I am very pleased with it. I modified the above pattern slightly and the modifications worked out well...

A friend of mine saw the celtic knot purse wanted to buy some purses as gifts for the grand-daughters. This and that occured and I am making them as a gift for my friend to regift for the grands.

I am glad I am making them as a gift as I would feel guilty making money off them. I struggled in the making of them. For some reason the fabric had a mine of its own - I pulled out stitches in both of them - and I hate to rip seams - I avoid it at all costs. The orange one had more seam ripping than I've done in the past year. Then my sewing machine got balky and the clothe's line cord really was a bit too bulky. I feel bad that I struggled with them when the other two purses were so easy.

I love the fabric and the buttons I used on them though. I hope the grands like them.

14  a bevy of bears (my kinda memory bear) in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by Mary Bell on: October 22, 2006 03:16:24 PM
I found the pattern for these bears at my favorite thrift store and bought it without a second thought. My mom used to make these bears for us when I was a child. I don't think she has any of them anymore. So I thought I would make some for my girls. The two flannel bears are from receiving blankets my Mom made for the girls when they were newborns. My girls loved to be swaddled (both were swaddled past their first birthday!!) and Mom would make these huge flannel or seersucker blankets to use.

The dark grey bears are made from my Grandpa M's old pea coat. When he died, I asked Mom to get some of his clothes for me. I intended to pay an exorbitant amount of money to have it made into 'memory' bears for the girls. Twice I almost sent the coat off but chickened out due to the cost. So when I got this pattern I decided I would do it myself. Both of my nieces will get a bear and both of my girls will. I still have one of his suit jackets to make bears for nieces and nephews who are yet to be.

I have to admit. When I clipped into the shoulder seam of Grandpa's coat to start ripping it up I felt like I was doing something sacrilegious.

16  christmas gifts - decoupage on thrifted items in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by Mary Bell on: October 08, 2006 08:38:53 PM
this is a plaque I bought at goodwill - I painted and distressed it then decoupaged this otter from an audubon print onto it for my FIL

below are some thrifted kleenex covers that I bought and decoupaged appropriately for various friends and family - the LOTR kleenex box is for my SIL and BIL...I am showing the Vigo side cause I am rather smitten with him... Wink

John Deere Tractor Box for my FIL

Library Box for my sister the librarian - used all sorts of stuff - the base is decoupaged with pages of an old dictionary - the stuff on top come from used and discarded books - I even found a book fine slip...I showed this side because it features our high school library...

This is for my baby sis - it is supposed to look like water stained terra cotta with moss growing on it - my first attempt at any sort of faux painting... Smiley

17  something for myself - tin can votive holders in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by Mary Bell on: October 08, 2006 08:28:01 PM
I've been making and making and making things for others and I needed a break - something for me and something quick...

these votives are made from generic cream of mushroom soup cans - the leaves are from napkins that are glued/painted on with a mixture of 1/3 glue and 2/3 water - a little dry-brushing, some gold-leaf, and some twine and beads and there you have it...

I punched holes in the sides of the cans too - wherever I punched a hole - I accented it with gold-leaf - I also painted the gold leaf around the rim...

They look really pretty in the dark when lit...the light dances behind the holes - very flickery...

19  laundry - and a gift that won't be everyone's cuppa in Needlework: Completed Projects by Mary Bell on: September 12, 2006 04:33:57 AM
this is for a friend of mine in Scotland - she loves laundry-on-the-line - she is also loves 'art' and things in a more unfinished state - so this is a gift for her to hang on her wall and stick pins and other things too...

the photo is her own personal favorite among her reams of laundry-on-the-line photos...

so this is a picture of some mountain and laundry she took somewhere in Scotland - gorgeous, isn't it?

I apologize for the poor quality photo...
