Noodle_bug I may have to pass that notebook idea onto my sister. Her 9 year old is in fourth grade but his reading is that of a 1st grader. He doesn't even know his basic sight words. HOW he was passed on with his reading skills I dunno but this is a great idea!

And that has is just too much. I love it!  Grin

Great, I hope it's helpful to her! The kids I work with are behind their age groups too - that's why they get extra help - but it can be hard because games designed for their reading level are too babyish for them, whereas games they would find fun use words that are too hard! So I end up stealing ideas and mashing them together a lot!

Very minor moan --
My mum, who has never asked me to craft anything before and (whilst always appreciative) never wears / uses anything I make, has just asked for if I can 'knit' her some crochet gloves she's seen... After 3 hours searching patterns on ravelery I cannot for the life of me find a knitted equivalent!!

Challenge: detention - August
Spew: Beanstalk (primary school reading assistants)
House: Ravenclaw
Project: story cards
I made the mistake of letting one of the kids I raff with see the game that I play with another (story cubes) - of course, he wanted to play it too... Fine, except I used that game to target areas that this kid doesn't need to work on (story comprehension)! So, I repaired that by making this, secondary version that had the same gameplay aspects but also focuses on some phonics  Cheesy in cut up a zillion cards, wrote phonics words on them and decorated the box - we pick 5 and use those words to make up a story. He seems to like it... But he's still asking about the dice game so I might have to come up with something else too!!

Challenge: detention September
Spew: beanstalk
House: ravenclaw
Project: Voices game

So, I thought of this last term and tried a few ad-hoc ideas around the concept - I've been meaning all summer to make it up properly and of course ended up doing it the night before my first session!
It's a flip book - I cut all the pages of a notebook in half, wrote fry phrases (phrases made up of phonetic and sight words) in half, character names on the other half - you pick a character then read the phrase in that voice Smiley

Oh my word, you try coming up with 200 characters a 6 year old will know at midnight!! ARRRGH!!

Challenge: head's challenge sept
Spew: refugees
House: ravenclaw
Project: entralac hat
I've knitted entralac before, but doing it in the round required a whole new level of organisation!!

Challenge: house unity
Spew: refugees
House: ravenclaw
Project: stripy beanie
Uniting ravenclaw blue with slytherin green!

Challenge: Floo cast courts
House: ravenclaw
Project: Kitchen Sink Crumbles
Tom is working away at the minute - and it's his birthday! I sent a box of goodies (bubbles, some toys, a couple of cards from me and the family, lots of sweets!) Including, of course, birthday cake... Except actually they are biscuits, because I'm doing over time at work and had to bake them on Monday for a Friday birthday, and I thought biscuits would survive both the time lag and the postal service better!

Thing is, I'm experimenting with a vegan diet at the moment (I'm into animal rights and have issues with the dairy industry) I've promised Tom that is he sources eggs / milk from known places I'll eat them - but for the time being I was baking biscuits that I couldn't try as I went along! They could be very surreal indeed!!

I used this basic recipe

But only half as much coconut - then I added in a half handful each of:
- crushed pecans
- dried cranberry
- mini marshmallow
- flaked almonds
Plus 4 tablespoons of melted crunchy peanut butter Cheesy
I then did end up putting in an extra spoon of syrup to help bind the mix

One baked and cooled, I melted up some milk chocolate, dipped both ends and let set. I road tested a couple on my housemates and they say they're good!

CLM - I am just about with you! I may have pulled out a few bits of fabric to play with combinations! No cutting or sewing til I get a partner in my targets but I'm having fun seeing how things go together and thinking about fabric weights!

I love signing up early for swaps because every time someone new signs up you get to go 'ohhhh cool I hope I partner them because they always have the best themes / take awesome gallery pics / haven't ever.done a swap I'm in before / are generally amazing'. And by the time partners come out, every partner is your dream partner Cheesy
