1  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Ongoing hoopla swap? on: February 24, 2013 08:44:34 AM
Does anyone know if there is another ongoing hoopla swap in the works? I've been out of the loop for awhile, but I was just looking at my wall, thinking about how a new hoop would look so nice there... Smiley

I sadly do not have time to organize it, but I was just wondering if anyone was planning on doing it.

# of angels needed: 1

I need one swap angel for IzzyBee. This package must include a 3 point craft and a thoughtful letter introducing yourself. IzzyBee has been EXTREMELY patient waiting on her partner, so I am looking for an angel that could send a quality craft by June 30.

- Lives in the UK
- no allergies
- loves animals, nature, and reading
- dislikes "supernatural" things, overly pink fluffy things, and sports
- would love to receive jewelry, posters/ornaments to decorate her bedroom, knit or crochet items, vintage or vintage-like items, and animal themed items

PM me if you are interested in being an awesome angel for IzzyBee! Thank you! Smiley

4  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / The Kraken!! on: May 28, 2012 10:36:54 AM
I made this hoop for RebeccaJay in the Ongoing Hoopla Round 6 swap - here theme was "cryptozoology." It was inspired by (and closely modeled after) the artwork on the Kraken Rum bottle. I didn't want to let this one go!

Thanks for looking. Smiley

6  NEEDLEWORK / Needlework: Completed Projects / Two pregnant ladies on: April 06, 2012 09:08:37 AM
I made this hoop for taloola in the Ongoing Hoopla Rd 5 swap. She requested a pregnancy-themed hoop - here's what I came up with!

This is the original artwork I found on taloola's pinterest that inspired the hoop:

I had a lot of fun with this one, and I think taloola really liked it! I worked the entire thing in backstitch to maintain the "sketchy" feel of the original work.

Details of swap:
This is Round 4 of the Pen Pal Swap! This is a swap for people who love receiving something other than bills and junk in the mail and who want to keep the nearly-lost art of letter writing alive! There are many different ways this swap could work, but for those of you who participated in Round 3, we will be following pretty much the same format. Here's a link to Round 3: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=388990.0 A big thank you to the organizers of past Pen Pal swaps - I stole much of this from you! Smiley
It will start like a normal swap: you send me your questionnaire, and I'll match you up with a partner. I will assign one person to be Partner 1 and the other Partner 2 (I'll let you know which one you are when I send out partners). Partner 1 will have two weeks to write a thoughtful letter introducing herself - you must include 3 QUESTIONS for your partner to answer. Two and a half weeks after Partner 1's send out date, Partner 2 will respond to the letter, answering the 3 questions and including 3 MORE QUESTIONS of their own. One month after Partner 2's send out date will be the send out for the craft. This will be a 3 point swap! The letter can count as some of your points (1 or 2, depending on how long it is/how much time and work you put into it), and of course, you can include extras as long as you and your partner agree ahead of time (no one likes an awkward swap!). The main focus of this swap should be the letters; however, hopefully you can use what you learn about your partner through the letters to make a thoughtful item for your partner. Also, since this swap happens over such a long period of time, you MUST check in to this thread at least once a week. A simple "still writing/crafting away" is fine, but it gives both the organizer and your partner peace of mind to know you're still keeping up with the swap.

Large = 3 points
Medium = 2 points
Small = 1 point

By Time
Large = 3 or more hours
Medium = 2 or more hours
Small = 2 or less hours

By Size
Large = A shawl, a shirt, a skirt, a set of jewelry with four to five items, a purse

8  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Weddings and Bridal Showers / Brain teaser wedding favors... on: December 11, 2010 05:57:31 PM
Ok, this isn't exactly a crafty question, but I'm hoping you guys will help anyway! Ages and ages ago I was on the wedding board here and saw a wedding where the couple gave out those metal wire brain teaser puzzles as wedding favors. They attached cute little tags that said...something! This is what I need help with! I searched all over for the post, but I can't find it.

They are the metal puzzles that have two pieces connected and you have to try to take them apart. I think the tag was something along the lines of "we tied the knot...etc.", but it was more clever than that...

I just bought 172 of these puzzles, so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me come up with some cute clever pun to attach to them! Smiley

Thanks guys...love you... Smiley
9  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Chicago bass drum - pic heavy!! on: May 01, 2010 10:23:04 PM
OK, so I've been meaning to put this up for quite some time, but was always stymied about where it actually belonged. Part paper craft, part paint, part stencil...so here it is in miscellaneous Smiley

My boyfriend, a professional drummer, purchased an acrylic drum shell on ebay. Turns out it was actually two floor toms that had been fused together, so if you know anything about drums, you might know that it could make a pretty boomy bass (kick) drum. Problem is, the thing was hideous. The fusing was noticeable and ugly, and the owner had painted it gold and given it a crazy orange glitter stripe.
We decided to make it better. Here's what we ended up with:

Here it is when it arrived, minus the glitter (we ripped that off immediately).

We wanted to take advantage of the length of the drum, so we decided to go with a skyline. We're originally from Chicago, so we set to work with that in mind.

We had our families send us recent copies of the Chicago Tribune, and we sliced up all the Chicago/Illinois related articles. We turned these into a collage, which we then used to make our skylines (two, one for each side).

I used some gray and glitter spray paint to give the skylines more depth, and then we attached them to the drum (after experimenting and failing with several adhesives).

Sponge painting the sky

Re-attaching the hardware (with some help from Sadie)

The finished product, with the rest of the kit!

10  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Paper Crafts: Discussion and Questions / Drum project -- need adhesive advice! on: August 29, 2009 04:53:09 PM
So this isn't strictly a "paper" craft, but this board is probably the place where this question belongs.  I'm having a frustrating crafting moment, and I'm counting on you craftsters to have the answer! Smiley

I'm reconstructing/modifying an acrylic drum shell; the design is the Chicago skyline on Lake Michigan, and the skyline is made from a collage of Chicago Tribune newspaper clippings.  I used Elmer's Craft Bond to stick the skyline to the drum, and then superglued down any pieces that wanted to stick up (antennae on the Sears Tower, etc). Well, this is not working.  The edges and tricky pieces are still sticking up.  It's too late to Xyron (and I don't have one anyway), and if superglue doesn't work, I don't know what will.  I sprayed an acrylic gloss over the entire thing, and I'm afraid that may have just contributed to the problem, warping the paper.  The drum is looking really cool, but those loose edges are just going to make me batty!!  What kind of adhesive might work to permanently stick newspaper to acrylic?
