31  Re: The longest time it took you to finish a project? in Stitch And BOTCH by PimpernelSmith on: July 29, 2009 09:38:42 AM

8 Years -- it's what happens when you go straight from stockingknit to cables & stuff, having barely learned to read patterns....

32  Sewn Nesting Dolls in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by PimpernelSmith on: July 04, 2009 08:09:41 PM
Hi,

This is my latest Seat-of-the-Pants/No-Map creation attempt.  Our niece is fixated on her Grandparents' Russian nesting dolls -- super spiffy ones they got in Russia -- and I wanted to make her a set of her own that would be washable, and not have so many parts to go missing.... Flying under the gun, this is what I managed to turn out for her birthday party today.

Tips for improvements welcome!  I learned a LOT from doing these, but obviously need to learn more....

The Outermost Doll: Grandma

The Family Entire:

The Family's Lining:

While nobody actually LOOKS like the members of her family (except the black and white dog, that the 2yr old immediately named), each is 'inspired by', so to speak..... Keep scrolling to see detailed individuals.

New annoying one: it covers the drop down menus and prevents navigation....which annoys the scrud out of me... Wink

34  Recycle & Be Warm -- Simple but Satisfying in Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by PimpernelSmith on: March 02, 2009 04:48:05 PM

Okay, not the snazziest versions of weatherproofing ever seen on Craftster, but quick, functional, cheap and satisfying!

1. Draftdodgers for the doorways.
Took two pair of kids trousers; cut the legs off; cut legs in half lengthwise; sew two lengths together and then stitch into a long tube. Put sand into discarded zip-locks, and roll to fit diameter of tube. Alternate sandbags with hand-fulls of polyfil/scrap yarn/scrap fabric. Tie off end (this allows you to empty the tubes from time to time and wash all the floor gunk off them). Ta-Da!

2. Door Cover/Insulated Drape
Got old comforter at Goodwill and put grommets along the top.

Use left-over bits of denim from project #1 to create close-fitting pockets along the bottom, and slide a 4oz fishing weight into each.

Hang on discretely placed nails and ----

We now have a 10 degree difference between the stairwell and the mud room -- Yea!

36  Cubs Hat & Mittens in Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects by PimpernelSmith on: December 19, 2008 11:39:53 AM

Made these for my nephew using the pattern out of Warm Fuzzies. Unfortunately, the mittens are obviously too small, and the hat may be as well.  Undecided *sigh*

I'm sending them to him anyway, with a note that if they are too small then they should fit the Alien I made him last year.......

Anyway -- they were fun, and I will try again sometime and augment the sizing.

Made it reversible, in case he ever wants the Lumber Jack Look:

The WAY too small mittens:

What's funny is that the Cubs are only his SECOND favorite team; he's a Yankees' boy living in Manhattan, so who knows if he'll get teased for this....(HE chose the polar fleece!)

37  Pillowcase Sleep-over Tote for my Niece in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by PimpernelSmith on: December 19, 2008 11:30:27 AM

One gift done --- YEA!

Found this faux suede poly that my niece loves to stroke and created a Pillowcase Tote for her to use when she goes to sleepovers.

The snaps at the side close the pillow in; the handles are fairly soft so that they won't poke in the night.

The inside. Depending on how much she stuffs in it, she can carry it with the top snapped or open.

I made this up, and am not knowledgeable about fabrics, so I just hope it's durable enough for the job...

38  Re: Once You Pop Swap Rd8 - HALLOWEEN GALLERY! in The Swap Gallery by PimpernelSmith on: October 07, 2008 07:02:09 PM
WOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO!! Tazzell has spoiled me rotten with the most glorious stuff!
It got here today -- and it was perfect timing: Scottish weather here in Iowa, and it's my birthday week!

See -- Cool and misty outside my house:

A Package Awaits ME!

Oooo -- Look! Carnivorous plants grin at me!

Even before opening the can I've got an amazing bookmark and note cards:

Aren't the cards fantastic?  I'm horrid at getting Holiday cards out at Christmas, so I send my nearest and dearest (the people who love me enough to forgive the above) Halloween cards every year.  Wait till they see these!

Now, to the can -- Here's the lid:

Packed to the gills! Mmmmmm tea ---

Unpacked Haul:

See all the yummy candy -- And none of it stuff I've ever seen before! Tazzell even sent me Halloween toys!

See the bat in the knit cloth --

A pumpkin pincushion which may be too cute to stab --

The most gorgeous, comfy & warm (yes, I am wearing them as I type) fingerless gloves --
(Tazzell must have picked up on my envy of Rose's in Doctor Who...)

And look at the tea cozy -- IT FITS!! My DH loves it; he suggests we have after-dinner tea when our friends come over next weekend.

THANK YOU, TAZZELL!!!!  THANK YOU, TAZZELL!!!!  THANK YOU, TAZZELL!!!! THANK YOU, TAZZELL!!!! THANK YOU, TAZZELL!!!! THANK YOU, TAZZELL!!!! THANK YOU, TAZZELL!!!!

Hey Tazzell -- shall I make more barrettes? I can!  Wink  They were fun, but I was afraid no one in your home would need them, so I only did the two.   (Thanks for giving me an excuse to try needle felting, by the way!  Grin )

I'm going to post one picture, just to prove that (excluding candy) almost everything really COULD fit into the Pringle's can -- and this was BEFORE I was forced to remove the medicinals:

I'm dying to know if the Doctor Who glows at all -- it has a small amount of glow-in-the-dark paint swirled into it....  Wink

40  Silly but Satisfying FlipFlop Fun! in Shoes: Completed Projects by PimpernelSmith on: August 09, 2008 01:37:35 PM

My niece regularly calls me (long distance) to let me hear her clunk around in her mother's house shoes, so I decided that for her birthday I would make summer and winter house shoes for her!

These are the summer -- super easy, silly, but fun.  Hot glue and sharpies to the rescue!

 Cheesy
