1  That's Fascinating! in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by Teamama on: May 09, 2013 11:04:49 AM
So, I thought I'd share a few of the fascinators I've created lately. A friend of mine is a real royal nut, and at her wedding last year, all of the ladies wore fascinators and/or hats. Since then I've become rather interested in these lovely little creations.

C&C welcome and appreciated!

2  Re: Ugly button down to cute top - tutorial! in CHALLENGE 85 ENTRIES by Teamama on: April 05, 2013 07:14:49 AM
Thanks everyone! Just wanted to share how I wore this top on Easter Sunday morning.

It's a great layering piece - I can see it getting a LOT of wear... and now I'm on the lookout for a fun cotton print to do it again. Smiley

3  Ugly button down to cute top - tutorial! in CHALLENGE 85 ENTRIES by Teamama on: April 03, 2013 05:33:34 AM
So, I don't think I've ever written a re-fashioning tutorial before, but I was so pleased with how this came out that I just had to share it with you, and thankfully I took WAY too many pictures along the way!

So I started with this (pretty seriously) ugly button down lace top that I got at the V-V boutique (aka Value Village). I liked the lace and... that was about it.

First thing to go was the collar. Then the sleeves. The trick with the sleeves is to cut them so that the seam that connected them to the body of the shirt is still there. That gives a nice solid amount of fabric to fold under and hem for the arm holes. Then I cut out a much more flattering neckline. (Looking better already!)

Then I cut open both sleeve along the seam to give myself more fabric flat to work with

And created a little collar pattern to work with

Pin the pattern to the lace (because lace is finicky and hard to work with). If you're not using lace, you could just trace your pattern onto the fabric. Making sure you're cutting 2 pieces for each collar piece. (so 2 pieces here)

And cut it out with a seam allowance

I then cut it in half and cut two (four - two of each) more pieces because I wanted a wider peter pan style collar to go with the neckline. You can use your judgement for whatever piece you're working with here

Now that you have all your pattern pieces, on to the sewing!
First I sewed down the button placket. I wouldn't be unbuttoning this shirt ever anyway, and buttons at the bust always gape on me, so I sew down plackets wherever possible.

Then, turn under the raw edges of the armholes that you cut, using the seam allowance that was left as a stabalizing edge to sew on

Then sew each of the collar pieces together, and turn.

Once you've turned each collar piece, you'll need to topstitch each piece as close to the edge as possible. I use this stitch setting on my machine.

and sew right near the edge of each piece

voila! Collar!

Next I turned the bodice of the shirt inside out, sewed up about an inch on each side and an inch at the top of the shoulders to take it in to fit (no picture). Then I pinned the collar the way I wanted it to lay, but backwards, on the inside of the neckline.

Sew that down, turn it right side out, and then pin again so that you can topstitch the collar down on the neckline, and take this time to turn under any other raw edges on your neckline

and once that's done, you have a fab new lace shell, where you once had an ugly lace button down!

Voila!

Now throw that baby on with some pearls and head on out. I did!

C&C VERY welcome.

4  Let them eat Cakes! in Dessert by Teamama on: March 24, 2013 02:24:37 PM
Here are a couple of cakes I've made recently.

The first is a cake I made for my littlest one's 3rd birthday. He absolutely LOVES tools so that was the theme for this cake.

This second cake was an order for a little girls 3rd birthday. The Little Mermaid figures were provided by the client, and the rest of the decorating is buttercream with fondant accents.

C&C very welcome!

5  Adventures in fussy-cutting: Indian linen Jacket in Clothing: Completed Projects: General by Teamama on: February 25, 2013 07:34:24 AM
So, the hubs' grandmother gave me a bunch of fabric she had "just lying around" and as we were going through it we came to this beautiful piece of linen with all this absolutely GORGEOUS embroidery around the edges. "Oh! Jack (the hubs' late grandfather who used to be in the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery) brought that back on one of his trips from India! Don't worry, you can still have it."

Me: gulp. I'll never ever EVER be able to cut this. Ever.

Fast forward about a month and I'm still looking at this gorgeous piece of fabric thinking... I'd better just fold it up and put it in a closet now... but wait a tick - doesn't this fabric deserve to be seen!? Yes, it does!

So I laid that sucker out and went to fussy cutting. I knew I wanted to maintain as much of the beautiful embroidery as possible and it had a few holes that needed to be cut around as well and it became: this cute little jacket!

embroidery close up - isn't it gorgeous?!

6  Tire Cake: My first cake order! in Dessert by Teamama on: February 25, 2013 07:13:00 AM
So I've just finished a bunch of cake decorating classes and I had a cake order and I wanted to share it with you!

It's a tire cake, the birthday guy's name is Greg so I went with "Gregyear" instead of "Goodyear" and his birthdate instead of the typical tire numbers. It's a 'zebra cake' (chocolate and vanilla layered up so it looks like zebra when stacked) covered in strawberry buttercream, oreo flavoured fondant and then decorated to look like a tire.

They were very happy with it, so I would say my first order was a success!

7  Men's tee to women's peplum top. Plus tutorial! (Pic heavy) in Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by Teamama on: February 19, 2013 01:42:31 PM
I am completely in love with peplums. Honestly - as a curvy girl they are a masterful at creating definition to your figure... as a Mom, they are a miracle post-baby-belly hider. LOVE LOVE LOVE.

I don't love, however, how much it costs for a women's peplum top. Honestly! like $20 for a jersey peplum tee?! No thanks. Picked up a men's 2xl shirt from Walmart for $5 and a little sewing magic and voila!

I've also created a (probably sketchy) paint tutorial so you too can refashion a large tee to a cute peplum top!

Whew! That's a lot of pics!

8  1st Birthday Dress! in Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects by Teamama on: February 18, 2013 10:41:36 AM
So my BFF has the most adorable little girl, who just turned 1. I decided that she needed a super cute little dress, and since I had some gingham fabric left over from my 50's housewife circle skirt, I just knew it would be perfect for a dress for the little miss.

I'm sure she'll look adorable in it!

9  50s Housewife gingham circle skirt in Clothing: Completed Projects: General by Teamama on: February 17, 2013 02:03:20 PM
So I got this amazing fabric from Ikea a while ago, and it was just hanging around in my sewing corner wondering what it was going to be? Then one day I was browsing a pin-up clothing website when this fabric jumped up and said "Ooo! Ooo! ME! I want to be a circle skirt! PLEASE!"

So, I obliged.

Then when it was made i thought it looked like it should probably belong to June Cleaver or something... so I wore it with a simple white tee, pearls, rose cab. earrings (made by me also) and felt like- hey where's my apron? I've got to bake cookies for Timmy's class and get this casserole over to the Jones'!

Or something.

Anyway, here it is!

10  More Paint Chip Necklace Fabulousness! in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by Teamama on: January 24, 2013 08:05:42 PM
Here's a bunch more paint chip necklaces I've finished and put together. Now that I've got these down pat, I'm working on some with the pieces layered... I'm very excited about those. I love how much these resemble the pricy enamel style statement necklaces that are sooo popular right now, but they're really light on your neck, easy to wear and best of all CHEAP to make!

C&C SO welcome,
Tea.
