1  Hannibal Embroidery in Needlework: Completed Projects by RachelAS on: July 05, 2013 12:03:13 PM
Who doesn't like Hannibal? Especially the Tower of Bodies from 1.09, Trou Normand? I saw the episode and went, "THAT IS A FANTASTIC OUTLINE I MUST DO THIS."

So I embroidered it while watching Pushing Daisies with my mother and brother...guess it was kind of a Bryan Fuller kind of night.

(Sorry for the bad quality...I had to take the pic with the camera on my computer.)

2  Flying Squid in Needlework: Completed Projects by RachelAS on: February 26, 2012 01:30:04 PM
I came across this design over at Corvus Tristis and wanted to make it - so I did.

The 'bunting' is made out of scrap fabric and was a real bear to do.

3  Scoliosis earrings in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by RachelAS on: February 12, 2012 11:28:45 AM
I originally made these for the Craftster beading challenge, then realized it probably wasn't the type of thing they wanted. These earrings are basically a beaded representation of scoliotic spines with S-curves.

(The rest of this is just why I felt the need to make these, so feel free to skip the rest of this post if you don't feel like reading it.)

Scoliosis has basically run my life for me for the past thirteen years. I was five and having back pain, so my mother got me a mattress pad and that was the end of it. I got a physical the summer I turned eight and found out my scoliosis was past the cutoff point for surgery. Because I was so young, I got a Boston brace for it. I had the surgery when I was twelve. Long story short, the surgery was messed up, and so I ended up with chronic back pain. I've realized scoliosis is pretty media-shy, so I've been coming up with ways to try to get people to know about it, including writing articles, making things like this, and blogging about it occasionally.

For those of you who don't know (if you're still with me), scoliosis is the bending and twisting of the spine into basically what those earrings look like (for an S curve) or into the top or bottom half of those earrings (for a C curve). If you're interested in getting more information, go here!

4  T-shirt bag! in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by RachelAS on: November 06, 2011 01:07:37 PM
I saw the UrbanThreads tutorial on a ruffled T-shirt bag and decided "I can do that!" (Long story short: I couldn't. I can't do ruffles worth beans.) So I left the ruffles off and came up with this.

It says "Coffee! You can sleep when you're dead."

5  Coffee embroidery in Needlework: Completed Projects by RachelAS on: November 06, 2011 01:05:26 PM

I love the 1950s-era-looking "coffee" images. SO of course I had to make one.

The eyes freak me out a little bit. There's just something...off about them. Maybe it's just that the eyebrows/eye sockets aren't seen very well.

6  Voodoo doll - first doll made! in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by RachelAS on: November 04, 2011 02:22:36 PM
My roommate strung up skeleton lights around the door, which made me realize I was dropping the ball for Halloween decoration.  That, of course, sent me scurrying to my spare fabric bin and...well, this was the result.

Then, because I have scoliosis and I love in-jokes, I made a spine for the little thing.

It's stuffed with fabric scraps of T-shirts I've used for various things. It took around 3 hours to make and was hanging from the ceiling for a little bit.

7  Harry Potter jewelry! in Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General by RachelAS on: August 06, 2011 09:12:28 AM
I made jewelry for the HP premiere. I made a Ravenclaw/Slytherin bracelet, a Snitch necklace, and radish earrings.

The Snitch was made from gold Sculpey and silver wire. The radishes were made from red Sculpey and green wire. The bracelet was bronze wire and beads and a barrel clasp.

8  Hanlon's Razor bag in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by RachelAS on: August 01, 2011 02:59:40 PM
I found some old jeans when I was going through my drawers in preparation for college (18 days! YAY!!!!!). Naturally, I decided to make a bag. I found Hanlon's Razor - "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity" - to be especially relevant because I mixed up my laundry marking pen and my water-soluble pen, decided to learn satin-stitching while doing this project, and overestimated how much fabric I would need by almost a foot.

Live and learn, and luckily it turned out okay!
