1  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing Machines: Discussion and Questions / My Thread Keeps Breaking on: April 24, 2012 11:12:28 AM
The thread on my sewing machine keeps breaking, it works for about 2 inches then it snaps. I think I've found the problem but I'm not sure how to fix it.

I was sewing on a dress, and didn't know it had boning in the bodice. When I was sewing I hit the boning and my needle broke. I replaced it and avoided the boning. But now everytime I try to keep sewing, the thread breaks like I mentioned. It looks like the needle is rubbing on the metal plate where it picks up the bobbin thread and wears out the thread in a few passes. I've replaced the needle, thread, and tried many suggestions on how to fix it.

Is there any way to fix this problem? I'm in the middle of a very large project and have another waiting. Its very frustrating. I'm reasonably new to using a sewing machine and have been troubleshooting all over the place. Any help would be appreciated.
2  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Taylor Swift Swap? on: November 01, 2011 06:08:59 PM

This wouldn't be about Taylor Swift the person as much as it would be about Taylor Swift the feeling.

Have you ever seen her greeting cards? They bring me to tears on a regular basis in the card isle. So heartfelt, so girly, with loopy cursive hand-writing and glitter. Inspirational messages and pictures of a guy and girl, captured in a heartfelt moment.

Have you heard her songs? About hope, and love, and believing in yourself and what you're capable of.

Have you seen how she dresses? Honestly. If it could be more fantastic and whimsical and vintage and country I might just die.

So thats what this swap would be about. All that fun nonsense and being girls and loving music and dreaming about that special boy.

I would like to start in January because:
1) the holidays will be over and all will have more free time.
2) in my part of the world its the most dark, cold, depressing, long month of the year and i could do with a little glitter and sunshine.
3) it seems like nothing much happens around January or February. it'd be nice to have something to look forward to.

As for size, whatever is good for those interested.

Would anyone like to participate?
3  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Old Fashioned Romance Swap? on: October 09, 2011 08:54:48 PM
I'm in need of some old school romantic charm. Such as the romances found in these books and/or movies:

Pride and Prejudice
Jane Eyre
The Young Victoria
Sense and Sensibility

I'm thinking not a large swap, something small. maybe a few wax sealed love letters or poems, pressed flowers, ribbons, you get the picture. Maybe even like a secret admirer swap? We pretend to be the gentleman/lady and send our partner/love interest some heart-felt romantic stuff?

I was also hoping to start signups sometime in november and have endouts early-mid december.

I have never been an organizer, and honestly no clue how to do it. If anyone would be interested you'd be more than welcome.

So, do we have any takers?
4  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Wist Me Baby! on: July 11, 2011 10:03:56 PM
i know that there are the "wish list" swaps that come around about twice a month, but those are WAY too big of a strain on my time and crafting funds.

what if we do a swap where we craft one item from our partner's wist or pinterest, and include a small treasure/trinket/supply?

it could be a 3 point swap, but if we have more or less time/motivation, we could discuss doing either a smaller or larger swap with our partner.

i can't organize yet, if anyone would like to, you'd be more than welcome.

i'd also like to do this swap later, around the end of september begining of october. thats when my hours at work go down, my free time goes up, and the leaves and cold outside inspire me to be crafty. Grin

anyway, if there's interest let me hear it! we all love our wists and would love to have something from them!
5  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Cryptozoology Swap? on: May 01, 2011 07:10:04 PM
Ok. you can't deny it. you can try, but i know that deep in your heart, you are a believer.

Bigfoot, The Yeti, Nessie, Mothman, Giant Squid, Gnomes, Mermaids.

Whatever it is, you know you believe, and you know you want to craft them.

would anyone be up for a cryptozoology swap? I can't be an organizer, but if anyone would be willing i'd be more than happy to sign up.

opinions? ideas?

6  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: General / Tardis Hoody! revamped and awesome. on: April 03, 2011 12:03:56 PM
I wasn't sure if I should put this in the stencil forum, cause the only part of this that is stenciled is the tardis.  Huh

well its here now and here to stay!

I free handed the words "I visited tomorrow today." and splattered the "universe" behind the tadis with toothbrushes and paintbrushes. I love it! and wear it all the time. I love revamping my old clothes. it is awesome!

don't judge the plate on my bed.

food = love, ok?
7  IMAGE REPRODUCTION TECHNIQUES / Stenciling: Completed Projects / Doctor Who "Blink" Laptop Bag on: April 03, 2011 11:54:39 AM
I had to dress up my boring black laptop bag, and decided to do it with my favorite Doctor Who villian of all time! The Angels! I stenciled with construction paper, since I was lacking any professional mediums.

I used acrylic paints, and freehanded the angel and phonebox. The words bled under the stencil a little, but I think it gives it a cool kind of look. I love my bag now!

8  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / What stitch is used in this shawl? on: March 26, 2011 11:13:59 AM
http://www.etsy.com/listing/62429620/mustard-yellow-organic-cotton-seashell

I've asked the seller what kind of stitch or pattern this is, but sadly, no reply. I was told it was a variation on the "Pineapple" pattern, but it looks nothing like that. Not even close. I've been looking everywhere and searching the internet.

I know the crochet community on Craftster is a force to be reckoned with, do any of you amazing craftsters know what this is? Or how it can be accomplished?
9  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / The Tenth Doctor, More of a Doll Than Ever! on: March 21, 2011 07:39:14 PM
So, with my recent obsession with Doctor Who, it just seemed appropriate that he keep me company. While cruising the internet, I found lots and lots of Doctor Dolls, and had to make one myself.

Alas, I have no sewing machine and had no access to a fabric store. So I went in the attic, sacrified a stuffed monkey, skirt, sheet, sweater, and one of my dad's ties to make the 10th Doctor with nothing but a sewing box, needles, and time.

I painted his eyes, mouth, and converse. His hair was the monkey's fur, but it was red, and as we all know, The Doctor is "rude and not ginger." So, I took some elmers glue and hairdye, made a paste, and painted it on to his head to get the right color and signature "swoopy" look of David Tennant's hair.

Since I did all the sewing by hand, I had NO patience to do all the hems, so I used no-fringe...which left it looking crusty. And while painting his hair, some dye dripped on his head and made the smudge. But whatevs, you do what you can.

He also had his amazing glasses, but they were lost when he took a visit to my friend's house and rode in her car for several days, buckled up in the front seat.

My internet is being a tool today, and I could only upload one pic. I'll be loading more detail shots when its working properly.

10  CROCHET / Crochet: Completed Projects / Maddy is a Froggy! on: March 17, 2011 06:04:39 PM
I made this hat for my little Miss Maddy...

But I don't think she likes to be a froggy.

I crocheted the hat and filled the eyes with newspaper to give them a "googly-eyed" look, and the pupils are glued on.

I'm not sure what stitch it is, as I only know how to do one. haaa. Smiley
