I think the 1st Stitch -n- Bitch book is a great one for beginners.  Is it too big?  It has alot of good info and instructions.  When I teach friends to knit, that's the book I usually recommend.  It also has more fun projects than other "beginner" books.

It's gorgeous!  In fact, I like yours better than the ones on knitty.  I'm sure your g-ma is enjoying it and looks wonderful in it.  I think I'll check your blog to see how she's doing.
