I made an apron for my toddler son who likes to help his father cook.

It's made from a pair of my old jeans. The bottom is obvious. The top part is made from a leg. The ties are from the seams. The top pocket was the coin pocket. The top ties are attached via hook and eye. Another set of eyes is at the top so after he grows a bit we can move the ties up to the top corners. In the meantime, the extra fabric can simply be folded inward.
I expect you could do an adult version using very large jeans.
