I usually just lurk here but I thought I would come out of the woodwork in case this gift idea can help anyone out. This is seriously a no-brainer but the results are beautiful. I whipped one up this morning for a Solstice gift and it is beautiful . . . took me five minutes.
Here is a link to my blog with directions and a picture. The page has been loading a little slow but it should work just fine. http://rowdypea.typepad.com/the_rowdy_pea/
Happy Holidays to everyone!
Edited to add the directions to the project as they appear on my blog. Follow the link for a picture:
All you need:
a jar or drinking glass with straight sides
a piece of heavy paper to cover the jar
an image printed on parchment (I used a sun for solstice)
an Xacto knife or scissors
tape or glue
To assemble, cut a circle out of the heavy paper and center your picture so it shows through. Glue or tape the papers together and then wrap the heavy paper around the jar and glue or tape with the seam at the back. Put a tea light in the jar and you are finished!
This is a simple project but it acheives a very dramatic result when the candle is lit. Candle light is so festive and with a carefully selected image I think this craft is much more than just a last-minute throw together. It brings together a lot of the symbols of the season with the play of light and dark and creates a lot of atmosphere in a room. And because it is completely recyclable, there is no need for the receipient to feel compelled to find a permanent home for it. Which is great if you have some friends and relatives who live in small homes or are trying to downsize their lives.
