781  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: First spin - have some questions. on: January 20, 2013 04:28:54 PM
Thanks so much for all the helpful hints and tips!! I dyed my yarn with koolaid this morning  Grin

It's a tiny little skein, but I'm excited about it! I have a 3.5 ounce pack of roving that I'm going to start on soon. Yay!

Project Name: First Handspun Yarn

Brief Description: I went to a Fiber Arts Extravaganza in December with my BFF and while we were there we were introduced to the art of spinning fiber into yarn. I was immediately drawn to this craft, but it's very intimidating at first. I've been thinking on it since our trip and I finally ordered a drop spindle and some wool roving to try it. I received with my spindle a small amount of sample fiber to practice with. I'd say it was less than an ounce. I watched some YouTube videos and after a couple of terribly botched attempts, I was able to make something that looked more like yarn. I let it rest on the spindle overnight and then I soaked it in warm water and dyed it with Kool-Aid. I made a tiny skein from it that's almost 4 inches long when rolled up. It's far from perfect, but I'm so happy that I did it!

I've started my blanket! I've got 21 rows in and some wrist and hand cramps to show for it. I think I better take a break for a couple of days!

Well I didn't have enough yarn to wrap around the legs of my chair so I used my husband's hands instead. After I tied it and put it down it kinked up horribly.

Is this how it's supposed to look? Did I spin it too tightly? It's in some hot water now and I stuck a long cup in the center of the loop so it wouldn't kink up in the water. Did I ruin it?

I absolutely adore all of them! That little bear at the campfire is so sweet. I've never needle felted before, but I want to try it now!

@indigo_roses - That is such a beautiful yarn for your mitts!

It's Manos del Uruguay's Silk Blend. It's 30/70 silk/merino, and is amazing to work with. It's one of my favorite yarns!

Oh my goodness, I just used their Maxima yarn for a project and it was pure bliss. I need to check out their other yarns!

Thank you so much for the help! I'm not going to ply this, so I'll just keep it on the spindle for another day. How do you skein it? Do I need a yarn swift for that?

Ok I got my first drop spindle yesterday and watched several YouTube videos while doing this. I know it's far from perfect, but I have a couple of questions. Firstly whenever I would first start spinning again after winding some yarn onto the spindle, some of the yarn I just would would pop back up into the hook. It's like I didn't have it anchored right or something. There's no notch in my whorl to hold the yarn so maybe that was it. I also had a lot of trouble keeping the thickness consistent. It's just different all over. I'm hoping that's something that will get better with practice. Ok, so here is a picture of my finished sample fiber that I got:

Is it supposed to be that fuzzy? Sometimes, no matter how much I spun it, there would still be fuzziness around some parts of the yarn. I tried to smooth it by hand without much change.

Does this look right? Also, how long am I supposed to keep it on the spindle before it's safe to take it off? Does it need to sit for a while to let the twist set in permanently?
