1  U.K. AND IRELAND / ENGLAND / Re: thrift stores? on: October 21, 2006 08:52:21 AM
This gets sorted into different "quality" groups, and shipped out to Africa.  Then it is sold in bundles.  Of course this has an effect on the textiles market in Africa - African textiles and clothing businesses cannot compete with the secondhand cheap clothes imported from the UK and have to shut down and jobs are lost, and money flows out of African hands and into UK businesses causing problems in their own economy.

YES!! This is such a big issue! I've been living in Zambia, which used to have a thriving industry producing cotton textiles (chitenges - they rock) - but it's been massively undermined by the western "donations" of clothing & by the US subsidies on their own cotton production.

Anyway, slightly off topic but excited to see someone raise that issue.

Or are you hoping we'll share our favorite, tried and true ones with ya?

that's the ticket. i've got a few set aside already but yeah, was hoping some others might have something fun to contribute.

Perhaps you could do something cool with all the chitenge fabrics...  something like what people do with sari silk, only you could make "yarn" out of strips of those beautiful printed fabrics.

that is such a clever idea... i am so lacking in lateral thinking skills but this is clearly the way forward. i came home with about a thousand chitenges last time 'cause they are so beautiful & so cheap! what is your sister doing out there? i was there just travelling around first time, & now i'm going back to take part in an aids awareness project up in the north, near kabwe. i'm leaving in a few days actually so i'm freaking out a little now.

What about online shops?

Post isn't really reliable, & my budget won't allow me to buy yarn in s or $s. otherwise obviously that would have been ideal. don't even have enough luggage space to take a stash out with me!

i'm about to move to zambia for a year  Shocked

from a visit there earlier this year, i KNOW that people just don't knit. they crochet, & they have knitting machines in the markets. the ONLY type of wool they sell ANYWHERE in that benighted country is 4ply acrylic.

so, fellas, i need your help. please please please post me all your 4 ply patterns! i plan on taking a whole packet to try to keep me going since i know i'm not going to be able to access patterns while i'm there...
4  BATH AND BEAUTY / Bath and Beauty: Completed Projects / Re: come one! come all! post pics of your tattoos! on: November 13, 2005 06:01:33 AM
I wanna join the picture party!

This is my first & only & almost brand spanking new tattoo... 'Tis just over a week old. It's not the best pic but it's all I've got. It took me ages to decide where/whether to have it done, during which time I obsessed over tattoos & read all 160whatever pages of this thread. The text is my kinda personal mantra (it's a phrase from a Buddhist monk) & it's in my own handwriting. I'm already thinking about more  Smiley

I loved seeing everyone's tats, thanks for sharing guys!

I was going to say count me in as well, but I'm about to move to Cape Town so I guess that rules me out. Ah well, hope it's fun!

I love glasto because I never plan to go just to listen to the music, it's about the atmosphere and theatre and camaraderie for me (especially when you're stuck in mud and some burly bloke helps you out, tee hee!), but sometimes you're lucky enough to catch a band that really grabs you like The White Stripes. Oh and also The Dresden Dolls who were awesome!

Yeah, me too  Smiley This was my fourth year and it was fantastico as ever! I did stewarding with Oxfam which I highly reccommend btw.

Well, what do you envisage when you say gypsy? It's not a global look. The Romanies in the UK probably dress differently to the Romanies in India, for example.
