Design sketches:

Don’t ask me why but here is a sexiness of a women wearing a man’s shirt. Base on that reason, i have  this design idea to alter a manly man shirt into something super feminine for the longest time. When my husband handed me a couple of his old button-down shirt, i know it is time for me to test my imagination and DIY skills.

There is no right or wrong design for DIY projects, your imagination is your best assets. Whatever you want to make, draw or write the idea down immediately. I would also suggest that you use your material wisely and try not to waste anything.

There are a lot of parts of the shirt we can incorporate into our design. The advantage is most things can be save for later use or make the design more cohesive. For example, the cuffs and collar of the shirt are great decoration pieces if you pull them apart and add it back to your alteration project later on. Another things is extra fabric can be use to make ruffles, bows or accessories to match the new outfit.
Materials needed for this project:

Man Shirt (Long Sleeve), Sewing Supplies, Scissor, Seems Ripper, Pins

Step 1: Measure And Mark The Length And Shape

Take the time to measure how long you would like your future shirt to be, then use fabric market or chalk to draw the desire shape so it will be ready for cutting later.

Step 2: Cut And Sew The Edge

After we draw out our design, use a pair of sharp scissor to cut out the excess materials. Proceed to finish the edges by folding toward the inside surface and sew along the edge to avoid framing.

Step 3: Measure First Then Alter And Sew

Along the side of the shirt part, roughly measure you bust and waist and turn the shirt in-side out to mark the desire design shape with fabric marker. Pin before sewing help to keep things in place. Sew along the lines to achieve the curve and slimming result. Remember the more accurate your measurement are, the more fitting it could be.

Step 4: Cut Out The Collar

Use scissor to cut along the edge of the collar, be as close as possible but don’t cut into the sewed line so you don;t have to do anything to prevent it from falling apart.

Step 5: Make Ruffles

Use the parts that you cut off and sew them into a long line of strip. Gather the stripe’s one edge and sew them into ruffles. Simple trick is keep making 1 cm double layer folds to top and bottom while sewing.

Step 6: Pin Ruffles Onto The Top Edge And Sew

Place the ruffle around the outside top edge of the top part. Use pins to keep them on temporarily before the sewing. Once ready, bring it to the sewing machine and sew both layer down permanently.

Ready For A Special Occasion

Add a sharp color thick belt to create the romantic but classy feeling into your brand new outfit. Accessories are usually the easiest way to change the look of an outfit.

160  CLOTHING / Costumes: Completed Projects / Lolita Apron Tutorial on: January 02, 2011 08:55:25 AM
I got the idea to make this apron from the Lolita clothes website. I always fancy to buy a piece of Lolita style dress or clothing. But of course they are not cheap and also i don’t think i have to courage to wear them out. So in stead, i design some simpler version but Lolita inspired fashion outfit so i can wear them around the house or even wear them out if i want to.

Anyway, I hope you like my blog and my creations~

Step  1: Make The Top Portion

Draw a big heart on newspaper and use that as pattern to cut out the fabric. Finish the edges by fold toward the back and sew along the sides. Make ruffle with thin long pieces of extra fabric. While sewing a line in the middle using the sewing machine, gather the fabric and fold them as you sew.  Then Sew them along the 1 inch line of the heart shape apron top.

Step 2: Make The Straps And Waist Band

Cut out 1 long piece of rectangle fabric for waist band. the length has to be enough to go around your waist at least 3 to 4 times to tie a bow. Fold the edge and sew it to prevent framing. Then make two shorter straps for shoulder straps length all the way across the back of your waist. Add extra fabric along the outer side of the shoulder straps for a fancier look.

Step 3: Cut Out And Make The Lower Portion

Roughly measure your waist size for the lower part of the apron. I thought it would be fun to make the lower edge in cloud shapes. As usual, finish the edges and add extra ruffle along the 1 inch line. That matches the top design and give the whole look a more cohesive feeling.

Step 4: Connect Three Parts Together

Most important part of the DIY is the connecting part. Bring out your threads and needle or a basic sewing machines. Simply sew along the previous sewing line to hide the new seems. Sew the bottom part of the heart to the middle of the waist band and also place the lower portion in the middle of the waist band then sew them together. Also add finishing touches like ribbon bows, ruffles, or rhinestones where ever you desire. It’s your design, have fun!
