1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed / Chambray sailor dress with scalloped hem on: January 01, 2011 05:48:39 PM
Hi everyone! This is my first post on craftster Smiley

Sailor dresses has had a huge comeback in the past few years, and I immediately fell in love with them after seeing two similar renditions of a vintage trend,... Alexa Chung looked so cute sporting the A.P.C. one!

Sadly I found out far too late and both dresses had long sold out! I did stumble on the APC dress on ebay last month, with a winning bid of $270. I was pretty determined to find one affordable, or if it comes down to it- reconstruct one myself!

My luck came when I found this new vintage sailor dress on ebay ($10), it was pretty much the same colour and material as the V&V one. (I forgot to take a photo of it myself so these are from the listing)

When it arrived, it was quite an ugly and unflattering dress! But craftsmanship was top-notch. Definitely something lacking in garments on sale nowadays...

I worked on the dress in between 2 days and I'm glad to say it was a success!

So heres what I did:
- Shortened the dress and gave it scalloped hem.
- Removed shoulder pads, sewn in at the bust to resize from a size 6 to a size 4
- Removed the sleeves and used the excess material is sew 3/4 sleeves

I had just enough material to finish the dress. I'm rather proud of myself as it fits perfectly!

Heres some detailed shots of the scallops.

I still have yet to wear it out, but I can't wait to frolic in the fields in this! Smiley Hope you guys like it!
