91  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Fabric Baskets on: January 19, 2012 05:26:26 AM

This swap is now open: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=403406.0

I recently made these fabric baskets as part of the packages I sent in the Morsbag Swap, and they attracted a lot of attention.  The idea was raised of having a fabric basket swap, and susanab and I think that is a fantastic idea!!

Let's expand the idea to include any sort of a free-standing fabric storage container--baskets, boxes, bins and buckets all work.  Here is a link to a list of ten tutorials for all of these options.  Some of you might feel intimidated by this idea, but there is probably something in the list of tutorials that you could tackle.  If you have any other links, please add them below.

We want to start after susanab gets back from her business trip, so sign-ups would probably start Feb. 6th, and partners would be given on Feb. 11th.

We're thinking of making it very much like the Morsbag swap, where everyone makes one fabric container of their choice, plus two small extras.  Would you rather it be just one extra?  And how much crafting time would you like to have?  I'm thinking about 3 1/2 weeks, so send-outs would be around March 7th.

I'd like to hear your ideas!
92  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Lavender Cats and Springtime Sachet on: January 13, 2012 02:09:47 PM

Here are three lavender sachets I made today--yes, those kitties are filled with lavender, as is the pillow in the center!

The lavender cats were susanab's idea; she and I both love making (and having) stuffed plush animals, and she likes to take lavender with her when she travels, so she suggested I come up with a lavender-filled stuffie that she could take with her on her upcoming trip.  I've already sent her one just like the blue one, and she LOVES it!  The cats are 5" tall and made of fleece.  The faces are hand-embroidered.

The small pillow in the center is for my mom's birthday next month.  She dislikes the shorter, colder days of winter, so when I saw the saying "springtime always comes" somewhere online, I knew it would make a nice sachet for her.  The details are hand-embroidered, except the words, which are written in ink.
93  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Trinkets and Jewelry: Completed Projects: General / Scrappy Bracelet with Felt Heart Charm on: January 02, 2012 11:16:48 AM

I started making these scrappy braided fabric bracelets for the Fabric Jewelry Swap last month, but I used a metal charm for the decoration. (There's a tute for the bracelet on my blog.)

Yesterday I had the idea to make this small wool felt heart and use it instead; I'm very happy with how it came out.

I just cut two layers of felt, freehand, into a heart shape, then sewed on the seed beads to form a flower.  I used cotton embroidery thread for the leaves and the blanket stitch on the edge.

The matching beaded bracelet couldn't be simpler!  It's just a bead mix from Joann's strung on stretchy beading cord.  I love wearing the two bracelets together; I like the contrast of the hard, shiny beads against the soft fabric.
94  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Craft This Tote Round 2! Send out by Jan. 31st on: December 30, 2011 04:28:46 AM

If you are a person who can never have too many bags, this is the swap for you!!

Morsbags (www.morsbags.com) are handmade, re-usable, fabric shopping bags.  The website will give you directions to make a morsbag, and lots of information and inspiration about shopping “green” by avoiding plastic bags that can harm the environment.  I have made a few morsbags myself, and I can say that they are easy and fun to make!  I posted a tutorial on my blog that you might find helpful if you have any questions about the construction of the bag.

The morsbag is a very simple, basic bag (with the exception of French seams!—don’t worry, you CAN do it!!), so feel free to add something:  what about a pocket for coupons?  Maybe some ribbon, or an embroidered initial? Be creative and have fun!

To round out the package you send to your partner, you will also make two small or one medium item.  A small item takes about an hour to make; a medium takes about two hours to make.  Stalk your partner and make something she will love.

Details of swap:
--You will craft one morsbag (using the pattern at the morsbag website) PLUS two small or one medium item to suit your partner’s tastes.
--You will have a little over 3 weeks to craft, from 1/7/12 to 1/31/12.
--You have creative freedom to use any fabric, any embellishment, any technique you want to make your morsbag and the extras;  you are encouraged to put your own spin on it!  Just be sure it is something your partner will like.
-- You will need to post in this thread at least once a week so we know you are still crafting with us.

*PLEASE READ THIS!*
- No one like to be flaked on, so if you aren't sure if you can do this swap, don't sign up.
- You must get delivery confirmation if sending within the U.S., or a mailing receipt if sending elsewhere.
- If you must send late, let the organizers and your partner know ASAP.
- Good communication is very important.  Please stay in touch by posting weekly in the swap thread.
- Please post photos of the package you receive in the gallery.
- HAVE FUN!

95  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Craft This Tote round 2 (idea thread) on: December 26, 2011 05:16:39 AM

SIGN-UPS ARE OPEN ON THE SWAP BOARD:  http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=400992.msg4712814#msg4712814

Hey everyone, it's time for another round of  Craft This Tote!

This time we want to make and swap the bag above, called a morsbag.  If you click on that link and go to the website, you will find lots of information about making these re-usable fabric shopping bags.  They are unlined, but the seams are finished French seams; if you haven't done that before, you get to learn something new!  Theses bags are really fun and quick to make, and who doesn't want to be eco-friendly when you shop??

For the swap we will each have one partner and make one morsbag according to her tastes.  I would love to see people put their own spin on these--maybe some kind of applique, embroidery, stencilling, or other embellishment would make them so cool!  In addition to the bag, we will also swap two small crafted items (or one medium). (In the last swap the requirement was to fill the tote--but these are too large for that to be practical!!)

I made the one in the picture, and I have posted a tutorial on my blog to answer any questions you might have about making the bags.

The timeframe we have in mind is:  start sign-ups this coming Friday (Dec. 30), assign partners Jan. 7th, craft for 3+ weeks and send out by Jan. 31st.

There is one big change in this swap:  my BCB (Best Crafting Buddy) and regular co-organizer susanab has a big business trip coming up and won't have time to help me, so the amazing wendiek has agreed to step in and share the work of organizing!  Thanks, Wendie, this will be fun!

This will be a great swap to start the New Year--so come on and join us!
96  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / A Very Ninni Christmas on: December 16, 2011 12:58:48 PM
In the recent Christmas/Winter Ninni Swap, I made these little Ninni angel ornaments for my partner:

She has a white Christmas tree, and she decorates with red, lime, and turquoise, so I made her one Ninni in each color.  The pattern is free, online at RevoluzZza; I reduced it on my computer to about 40% (4" tall).  I made the Ninnis out of wool felt, with satin wings.  I used the star garland that is sold this time of year near the Christmas wrapping paper, for the halos.  I sewed the little quilted hearts on the machine and cut the edges with pinking shears, leaving them raw.  Each angel has a hanging loop.

My partner really loves them, and I do too!  I guess I need to make some for my tree now!
97  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / O Christmas Trees on: December 13, 2011 02:16:53 PM

In the current Christmas/Winter Ninni Swap, my partner said she would like  "the beginning of a little forest-land setting that relates to Christmastime; I like the idea of snowy woods with little creatures around a tree..."

I had to think about it for a while, but I finally decided that Christmas + snowy +forestland = these Christmas tree pillows!

I just drew the trees on paper, cut them out, and used the paper for a template when cutting the tree fabric.  I stiffened the fabric with iron-on interfacing, then sewed on the buttons, then sewed on the backs and stuffed the pillows.

For the woodland creatures, I was excited to have found a use for this American Girl Crafts kit that I had been given to review.  I whipped them up in a couple of hours.  Whoever designed this kit did a great job; the simple outline of the raccoons, combined with the surface detail, makes them really appealing.

And, these blue raccoons were PERFECT for this, because my partner is decorating for Christmas with red, lime, and turquoise!  The larger raccoon is about 9" tall, so I made the larger tree 14" and the two smaller trees 12".  I made the grouping to be a sofa decoration, but it is large enough to work along a baseboard or on a fireplace hearth.  My partner loves it!  Don't they look cute all together?
98  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Patchwork Heart Christmas Ornaments on: November 25, 2011 02:16:38 PM
I love hearts any time of year (I think my username says it all!)--so I recently made a whole bunch of heart ornaments for the Christmas tree.

They measure 3 1/2" across; the front of each one is made from 4 fabric squares, sewn together, then cut in the shape of a heart.  The back of each is a single piece of fabric.

Each one has a word I find meaningful in the center.  I printed the words from the computer, then traced the words onto muslin using a lightbox. I cut them out and sewed them to the front of each heart on the sewing machine, then hand-embroidered around the edges.  They are stuffed with fiberfil, and have a ribbon loop for hanging.

They aren't all for my tree; I will be giving some away.  They would be nice tied onto a wrapped package as an "extra" when gift-giving.

Here’s a swap for the busy crafter who loves fabric and sewing: a fabric jewelry swap!

Susanab came up with this great idea: you will swap one piece of handcrafted fabric jewelry with one partner, so it is completely do-able even with winter holidays approaching.  Check out this link for tutorials and ideas for lots of different things you could make:  I’ve also included a tutorial on my blog showing how to make a  fabric bracelet.  I’m sure you can find many other ideas online; share them with us in the thread!

Here are the types of things you can make:
--brooch/pin
--bracelet/cuff
--necklace
--ring
--earrings
--hair ornament (including headband)

Details of swap:
--You will craft one piece of fabric jewelry, using your partner’s questionnaire as a guide to make something she will love.
--You will have a 2½ week crafting time, from 11/26/11 to 12/15/11.
--You have creative freedom to use any fabric, any embellishment, any technique you want, as long as what you craft is jewelry, and made primarily of fabric.
-- You will need to post in this thread at least once a week so we know you are still crafting with us.

100  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Happy Plushie Wreath on: November 19, 2011 05:14:27 AM
I've made and received a lot of plushies this year in Craftster swaps, and this week I had a brainstorm about what to do with some of them:  BEHOLD, the Happy Plushie Wreath!!

I got everything but the plushies at Wal-Mart
--artificial wreath
--sparkly ribbon
--sparkly red (plastic) ornaments

First I wrapped the wreath with the ribbon, then I tied the plushies and ornaments to the wreath.  Yes, I TIED them with green string, rather than using glue, so I could edit anything I wanted to. (I sewed the string through the backs of the plushies so it wouldn't show on the front.)

I will hang this on the inside of our front door so we can enjoy it all season long (there is a more "traditional" wreath on the outside of the door so visitors think we're normal).
