81  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / I Love Cats Or Dogs Swap; send by 5/1 on: March 27, 2012 04:53:54 AM

If you love dogs or cats, or both, you will love this cat-and-dog-themed swap!

We will be crafting for the swapper, not the pet, so you don't have to own a cat or dog to participate (but you would be free to make a little something "extra" for Fido or Snowball if you wish!)  You can make any sort of cat or dog-themed items you think your partner will like, for example:

--a cat or dog shaped pincushion, bag, pillow, pouch etc
--a cat or dog plush or keychain
--use a dog or cat-print fabric to make coasters/mug rug, napkins, placemats, potholders, Kindle cover, iPod or cell phone sleeve, table runner, etc.
--hand or machine applique a cat or dog onto any of the above
--hoopla
--embroider a dog or cat onto anything!
--freezer-paper stencil a dog or cat onto a t-shirt or morsbag (www.morsbags.com) or anything else
--a serving tray painted with a puppy or kitty
--cushion cover decorated in any medium with a cat or dog
--anything else you can dream up!

This will be a 3-point swap, so you will craft either one small and one medium, or one large, or three smalls.
By Time
-Large = 3 or more hours
-Medium = 2 or more hours
-Small = 2 or less hours

By Size
-Large = A shawl, a shirt, a skirt, a set of jewelry with four to five items, a purse
-Medium = one single necklace or bracelet, a scarf
-Small = Earrings, stickers, wallets, pouches, bookmarks

By Price
-Large = $30 or more
-Medium = $10-$30 dollars
-Small = $10 or less
Any type of crafting will work for this, so you can sew, paint, knit, crochet, get crafty with paper or polymer clay, etc, as long as you make something your partner will like, based on her questionnaire and her pinterest, wists, etc.

Details of swap:
--You will craft 3 points-worth of cat and/or dog-related goodies, using any craft medium or technique, keeping your partner’s preferences in mind.  Each of the items should somehow incorporate the cat or dog theme (whichever your partner prefers).
--You will be crafting for the swapper, not the pet, but you may include something for the pet as an extra.
--You will have four full weeks to craft and send, from April 3rd to May 1st.
-- Please post in this thread (or the gallery thread) at least once a week so we know you are still crafting with us.

*PLEASE READ THIS!*

82  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / I Love Cats or Dogs Swap Idea--SWAP NOW OPEN on the swap board on: March 25, 2012 05:45:00 AM

I know there are tons of cat and/or dog lovers on Craftster, so susanab and I want to organize a swap for anyone who loves either (or both) of the two most popular household pets!  We will be crafting for the swapper, not the pet, so you don't have to own a cat or dog to participate (but you would be free to make a little something "extra" for Fido or Snowball if you wish!)

We're thinking of a 3-point swap:  a small and a medium; or one large, or three smalls.  Any kind of crafting that your partner likes would work for this, so you could break out your paintbrush and do a painting of a cat; or rev up the sewing machine and make a purse out of dog fabric; or pull out the clay and sculpt your partner's pet--whatever you think your partner will like, based on her questionnaire and her pinterest, wists, etc.

Timeframe:  we would like to start sign-ups this week, probably on Tues. March 27th, and announce partners a week later on Tuesday, April 3rd.  Since Easter and spring break (for some) will happen during April, we are thinking of a nice long 4 week crafting time, with send-outs on May 1st.

We welcome your input, suggestions, questions, or enthusiasm below!
83  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Octo-Bear on: March 15, 2012 06:30:19 AM
I made this Octo-Bear for Alchamy513 in the March Birthday Swap.  My partner got it yesterday and she said it's the best stuffed animal ever--yay!

This is not my usual style; I used a stuffie on her pinterest as a guide.  I used the pattern from the Mystery Critter Swap for the head and body.  I happened to have some black and white checkerboard fleece on hand, which worked great for the legs.  I spent a lot of time thinking about how to do the legs, but once I started working on them, they went together quickly and easily, and differently than I had planned!

The mouth is a zipper, and inside I put an arcade ticket, a fortune-cookie fortune, and a tiny key.

Tied onto the black ribbon around the neck is a large key that says "secret" and a token that says "unique".

I like going outside my comfort zone like this, it makes me grow as a crafter, and things I learned from making this stuffie will transfer to future projects.
84  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Embellished Fabric Baskets on: March 13, 2012 06:51:01 AM
Wow, fabric baskets seem to be everywhere these days!  I made these two for the Fabric Basket swap that is just finishing up (one for my partner and one for me!)  She likes linen, and she likes the French General fabric (by Moda), so I ordered an assortment of fat quarters to choose from for the lining.  One of the fabrics had these great bird images that I used for the outside.

I used the tutorial found here

Here's an in-progress shot.  The tricky part was to sewing the bird panel and other embellishments to the fabric before constructing the basket--the placement had to be just right.

The basket for me:

The basket for my partner:

She got her basket yesterday and loves it--and I love mine too!
85  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Monster Pouch Swap, send out by 3/20 on: February 28, 2012 04:34:06 AM

GALLERY

Pouches can be boring, but monsters are fun!  So join us and turn an ordinary, utilitarian pouch into a monster!

This swap will be small and quick, so even if you are busy you can fit it into your schedule.  It’s also good for any first-time swappers who might feel overwhelmed by bigger swaps.  The pouch can be any size or shape, based on your partner’s request, and it does NOT have to have a zipper—you can use Velcro, or a button-and-loop, or make a sleeve that doesn’t close at all.  And the “monster” part is entirely up to you; let your imagination run wild!

This swap was inspired by the cute little monster pouches HERE.  Try googling “monster pouch” if you need some ideas to get your creativity flowing!  There are monster tissue pouches HERE and a cell phone case HERE.

Pouch Ideas:
Makeup pouch
Pencil pouch
Electronics sleeve
Glasses/sunglasses case
Tissue cozy
Re-usable snack bag

Details of swap:
--You will craft one pouch, decorated like a monster, using any pattern, design, or technique (including knitting or crocheting), keeping your partner’s preferences in mind.  That’s it!  Just one item to craft!
--Put a little “something” inside the pouch as a surprise gift; something like a snack or crafting supply (a crafted item is okay too, but not required).
--You will have a little over 2 weeks to craft, from 3/3/12 to 3/20/12.
-- Please post in this thread (or the gallery thread) at least once a week so we know you are still crafting with us.

*PLEASE READ THIS!*

86  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Monster Pouch--SIGN UPS OPEN ON SWAP BOARD on: February 26, 2012 12:37:04 PM

This swap is now open for sign-ups:  http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=404669.0

Susanab and I want you to join us for a fun, quick swap:  the Monster Pouch Swap!

Everyone will make one monster pouch for their partner--no other crafted items are required, but you may exchange little extras if you want--you know, like a snack or a crafting supply.  You can use any pattern you want for the pouch, and you will have the opportunity to specify (on the questionnaire) what size pouch you would like.  You might want something for a specific item, like your iPod, so you would need to give the dimensions of the item; or you might ask for something like a pencil pouch or makeup pouch, and leave the exact size up to your partner.

If you google "monster pouch" you will get lots of ideas on how to turn an ordinary pouch into a monster!  They are all so cute, it's hard to choose just one to make!

Two weeks should be more than enough time to craft one pouch, don't you think?  And we want to get moving on this right away, so sign-ups are going to open on Tuesday, Feb. 28th., with partners announced on Saturday, March 3rd.  We will gladly take your ideas to heart, so if you have any suggestions for this swap, please add them below.
87  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Pincushion Surprise on: February 25, 2012 09:43:39 AM

For my Random Act of Crafty Kindness, I started out wanting to do something big for someone, but ended up doing something small for many people—hoping that the total impact would be big.

I made these cute pincushions for everyone who signed up for the Fabric Basket Swap that I was coorganizing--I always wish I could send something to everyone who signs up for one of my swaps, so this time I did!   Since this would be a group of sewists, I decided to make each person a heart-shaped, tie-on pincushion based on some that I saw on the Better Homes and Gardens website.
Since I didn’t know how many would sign up, I had to plan to send to as many as 40 people (the maximum our swap would take)!  I cut out the wool felt for 40 pincushions, but in the end I only had to send 17—that is the “random” part, since I didn’t know who or how many people would be involved in my RAK.  Here's an "in progress" shot:

I know it’s fun to receive something that’s a surprise, so I wanted to add to the fun by sending them anonymously.  A few people knew it was me right away, because we have swapped, and they knew my address (I put my return address but not my name on the envelope).  There was only one international swapper, and I did put my name on her envelope to be certain it would reach her.  That was Wendiek, who coorganized a swap with me recently, and she pm’ed me soon after she received.  Her note of happy surprise and thanks really made my day—and she said I made HER day.  That’s the reward of these little acts of kindness, both for the giver and the receiver.

Here are a few of the hearts before they were tucked into envelopes and mailed:

Another aspect of randomness developed on Tuesday, Feb. 21st, the day most of the envelopes were delivered.  StickerChic87 posted a picture of her heart in the challenge thread, and then other people started chiming in that they had received one too!  It was all I could do to keep from posting “you’re welcome!” to the people who said “thank you” there!  That part was the most fun for me, and I kept checking back to see if anyone else had posted about receiving.

This was a great idea for a challenge, and it was so much fun for me, from start to finish!
88  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Fabric Basket Swap send out 3/6/2012 on: February 06, 2012 04:09:14 AM

Here's the GALLERY

Let’s all get organized and swap some fabric baskets (or buckets, boxes, or bins—any sort of free-standing fabric storage container)!

Here is a link to a list of ten tutorials for all of these options.  Beginner sewists might feel intimidated by this idea, but there is probably something in the list of tutorials that you could tackle.  Here’s another: Square-bottomed canvas bucket.  I also posted a tutorial on my blog for the baskets in the picture above. You don't have to use any of these tutorials or patterns, though.  If you have a link not included here, share it with us below!

Details of swap:
--You will craft one fabric storage container, using any pattern or design, PLUS one small crafted item to suit your partner’s tastes.
--You will have a little over 3 weeks to craft, from 2/11/12 to 3/6/12.
--You have creative freedom to use any fabric, any embellishment, any technique you want to make your fabric basket and the extra; just be sure it is something your partner will like, by looking through her wists or pinterest, and questionnaire.
-- Please post in this thread (or the gallery thread) at least once a week so we know you are still crafting with us.

89  POTTERY, CERAMICS, POLYMER CLAY / Polymer Clay: Completed Projects / Cute Little Ring Dish on: February 03, 2012 05:07:46 AM
I've seen simple bowls made from polymer clay, and I've been wanting to try it myself.  This is the cute little ring dish I made for myself yesterday:

I did a step-by-step walkthrough on my blog, but the basics are:  roll out the clay, stamp a design, cut out a circle, add the clay heart to the center, press it onto an upturned oven-proof bowl, and bake.  After baking, I made a twist of the two colors of clay for the rim, pressed it in place, and baked it again.

To make it nice and shiny, I used a thin coat of Varithane polyurithane varnish.  It dries quickly, so I only had to wait an hour after varnishing the back before I could varnish the front.

I made this ring bowl first for a partner in the Craft This Tote Round 2 swap; here's hers:

I love this dish, and there are a lot of other things you could do with it.  Next time, instead of the heart or flower, I want to stamp an inked leaf impression onto a light-colored circle for the center detail.  I also want to come up with a more delicate-looking edge for the next dish.  Any ideas?
90  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Valentine's Day / Happy Heart Card on: January 22, 2012 10:26:56 AM
I want to thank Lime Riot for the inspiration for this card.  I saw the Valentine cards she posted on her blog, and I HAD to make something similar myself.  I love the idea of giving a card that includes a little gift!

The heart has a pin on the back, so the recipient can remove it from the card and either wear it, or untie the bow and tie it to something, like her purse strap.  If you would like to make one (or more!) yourself, I just posted a tutorial on my blog.  The heart doesn't require much in the way of materials, and it went together pretty quickly.  I had bought a big reel of baker's twine that I had hardly used for anything, so I'm thrilled that it works so well with this project!  (You could use any kind of string or ribbon if you don't have baker's twine.)

I sew a lot more than I do papercrafts, so the card I made is very simple.  The stamped message could say anything you want.  I plan to make a lot of these cards to use for other things, starting with some that say "thanks".  Using different colors for the heart and card would make it appropriate for any time of year.
