31  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Old Fashioned Book Lovers Swap, send by Feb 26 on: January 10, 2013 06:16:12 AM

Calling all book lovers!  Let's swap books and craft something bookish!

CLICK HERE to go to the gallery

You will choose at least 10 books that you would like to read from one of the following lists (you will only receive one of them, your partner's choice; and if you can only come up with 8 or 9, that's okay!):

Modern Library 100 Best Novels (there are actually 2 lists there with 100 books each, but many of the same books are on both lists)

Gilmore Girls Book List (this is a list of books that were mentioned in the TV series "Gilmore Girls".  It has nothing to do with the show, though, so if you are like me and have never seen the show, it doesn't matter!  It includes a broader range of books than the first list.)

When you are assigned a partner, you will choose ONE of the books that your partner wants to read, and purchase the book (can be new, or used in good condition).  Read it before you send it if you want to!  Then craft two things:
--a bookmark
--a medium-ish item based either on the book, or books/reading in general

So you will be sending your partner one book, one crafted bookmark, and one medium-size crafted item.  And since you will be receiving a book in return, you could actually read two new books by participating in this swap.

If there is a book you've been longing for that's not on the list, just mention it in the thread and I will make a list of "craftster picks" that can be chosen from too.

Details of swap:
--You will purchase one book from your partner's list, and send it along with one bookmark and one medium crafted item.
--You will have 5 1/2 weeks to craft, from January 19 to February 26
--Please post in this thread (or the gallery thread) at least once a week so we know you are still crafting with us.
--Extras are allowed, but you should mention it to your partner if it's anything substantial.

*PLEASE READ THIS!*
- No one like to be flaked on, so if you aren't sure if you can do this swap, don't sign up.
- You must get delivery confirmation if sending within the U.S., or a mailing receipt if sending elsewhere.
- If you must send late, let the organizers and your partner know ASAP.
- Good communication is very important. Please stay in touch by posting weekly in the swap thread.
- PM both organizers and your partner when you send and when you receive.
- Please post photos of the package you receive in the gallery, and take pictures of what you make before you send it.
- HAVE FUN!

Calling all book lovers!  Susanab and I want to have a swap involving real books--no e-readers allowed!

For the questionnaire, we will each choose at least 10 books that we would like to read from one of these lists:

Modern Library 100 Best Novels (there are actually 2 lists there with 100 books each, but many of the same books are on both lists)

Gilmore Girls Book List (this is a list of books that were mentioned in the TV series "Gilmore Girls".  It has nothing to do with the show, though, so if you are like me and have never seen the show, it doesn't matter!  It includes a broader range of books than the first list.)

We will choose ONE of the books that our partner wants to read, and purchase the book (can be new, or used in good condition).  If you haven't read it before, go ahead and read it before you send it if you want to!  Then craft two things:
--a bookmark
--a medium-ish item based on the book, or books/reading in general

So you will be sending your partner one book, one crafted bookmark, and one medium-size crafted item.  And since you will be receiving a book in return, you could actually read two new books by participating in this swap.  I know there are a lot of novels on those lists that I would like to read, but if there is a book you've been longing for that's not on the list, just mention it in the thread and I will make a list of "craftster picks" that can be chosen from too.

We would like to open sign ups this Friday, with partners given a week later, and four weeks of crafting/reading time...that puts send-outs right around Feb. 19th.  If you think we need more than 4 weeks, just mention it below.

Are you interested?
33  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Fluffy is a Simple Bunny on: January 08, 2013 06:42:01 AM
Fluffy is a simple bunny who enjoys grooming her whiskers and playing with her doll.

I made her for my partner in the Junker Jane Style Doll Swap.

Fluffy is quite proud of her long and prominent teeth (made of polymer clay).

She made her name tag from an old cutter quilt.  That bunny has talent!

I'm not sure what happened to her ear...maybe the curling iron was too hot?

Just so WingsOfClay never forgets who made Fluffy, I put a Junker Jane-style label on the back, featuring my Craftster username initials.  (Note the ironic cute bunny fabric.)

Sewing in this style is so fun because there really are no rules.  Nothing has to be symmetrical, fabrics don't have to match, and raw edges are a bonus!  It's a good way to free your creativity...I encourage everyone to try making a Junker Jane style doll!  (And yes, we do expect to have a Round 2 for this swap...stay tuned....)
34  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Blythe Hats on: December 31, 2012 12:44:50 PM
I've rediscovered how fun knitting is, by making little hats for my Blythe dolls! After looking at the hats on their heads for a while, I decided they needed "something", so I added a different embellishment to each one.

Four of these hats are the same as the first beanie below. They are from the free pattern at xoxo, Blythe.  After knitting five beanies (I gave one away), I tried a new pattern, for the beret which in the second picture below. You can find that free pattern on Ravelry.  It's called the Ecoliere Beret by Maggie Baird.  I love the beret and am currently working on my second one.

Both patterns are appropriate for an advanced beginner.  The tricky part is working in the round with double-pointed needles--I've never done that before!

35  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / The Giving Bunny Project on: December 12, 2012 04:04:09 PM
I've been doing some art abandonment lately, so when I came across The Giving Bunny Project at Urban Threads I had to participate!  They offer a free pattern for cute little bunnies that you make and leave in a public place for a stranger to find and take home.  There's also a really nice printable tag the leave with the bunny that explains the project and gives the web address so the finder can report their find if they want to.  I made a bunch of bunnies!  The directions have you embroider the nose and eyes, but I made mine out of felt and sewed them on; it's faster that way for me.  Today I left two of them at the post office, and I plan to have a couple of them in my car or in my purse when I go out so I'm ready to drop one somewhere if I find a good spot.

36  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / Craft Hope for Children on: December 04, 2012 10:50:19 AM
There's a great organization called Craft Hope that collects and distributes hand-made items for people in need of hope.  On their Facebook page they just announced their newest project:  "Dolls, Animals and Monsters. Oh My!", and they need you and me to make and send stuffies of all kinds, that will be given to the children in the area of the eastern United States that was recently devastated by Hurricane Sandy.  Here's what I just made:

You can find the pattern for these critters HERE on my blog, or use any pattern you have on hand.  For full information and where to send them, visit Craft Hope HERE

38  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Winter Holidays / Weird Christmas on: December 01, 2012 01:28:11 PM
In anticipation of the Junker Jane Style Doll swap, which will be opening for sign-ups soon, I have been practicing by making ornaments in her weird and wonky style.  If you google "Junker Jane" and choose "images", you will get a ton of pictures of her work.

The following three pictures are the first ones I did.  I went a little heavy on the "creepy".

These last two are more kid-friendly; I think the cat is the best combination of my personal style with the Junker Jane look.

I hope lots of you will join us in the swap.
39  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Prayer Flag Swap Rd. 2; sign ups CLOSED, send by Jan 11, 2013 on: December 01, 2012 04:54:37 AM

Here's the GALLERY

The concept is simple: decorate a rectangle of fabric with words and/or images that convey a personal prayer. It can be all fabric, or a mixed-media piece, it's up to you.

The prayer flag will be a finished size of 5" x 8", so it will be small and easy to mail in an envelope. This will be a NO EXTRAS swap, so it will be doable even though the holiday season is at hand! (If you and your partner both want extras, you can post pictures in the personal swap gallery).  The send out date is in January, and a prayer flag is quick to make, so if you don't get started until after New Year's day, you will still have plenty of time.  You may choose to have one or two partners.

There is a cool blog called The Prayer Flag Project that is dedicated to these flags where you can read more on the topic. The original idea is that the prayer flag is hung outdoors to slowly deteriorate and release your prayer into the world.  With that in mind, you can see that it is not expected to be a masterpiece of perfect stitching.  Rather, it is an art piece that is thoughtfully and prayerfully made.

Click HERE for the gallery from the first swap.

We will use the recent article about them in Cloth Paper Scissors as our guide; the instructions below are taken from that link:

How to Make Prayer Flags

1. Cut pieces of fabric to 5" x 11". Use materials you already have on hand.
2. Fold the top down on each piece of fabric and stitch in place to create a 3" sleeve, making the flag surface 5" x 8".
3. Paint, stitch, embroider, appliqué, or collage the flags.
4. Add words, journaling, or symbols as desired. You can appliqué letters, add hand stitching, stencil with textile paint, or just write with a permanent marker.
5. Thread the flags onto a string or cord and hang them outdoors so the breeze will catch them and spread your intentions.

Details of swap:
--You will craft one prayer flag for each partner, keeping your partner’s preferences in mind.  Extras are NOT allowed.  If you and your partner want to send anything other than the prayer flag, please do not post pictures of those items in the swap thread (but you may post pictures in the personal swap gallery, if you like.)
--You will have almost four full weeks to craft and send, from Dec. 15th to Jan. 11th.
-- Please post in this thread (or the gallery thread) at least once a week so we know you are still crafting with us.

*PLEASE READ THIS!*
- No one like to be flaked on, so if you aren't sure if you can do this swap, don't sign up.

- If you must send late, let the organizers and your partner know ASAP.

40  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Winter Wardrobe for Blythe on: November 29, 2012 02:57:07 PM
Now that wintery weather is here, it made me feel cold to look at my Blythe dolls wearing summer clothes, so I made some winter things for them.  I found all the patterns online, but none of them printed out the right size (maybe I'm doing something wrong?) so I had to mess around with them and make some practice garments before I got the size right.

The kitty pajamas are made of fleece and the hood is lined with cotton fabric (and is being modeled by Bonnie).  I love how warm and cozy it looks!  The hood is really big, but that's good because it holds her long hair.  The pattern is from a Japanese site, and was originally for a bear. The link is HERE; you have to click on the word "Blythe" under the word "No' at the top of the page.

I am extremely proud of the hat I knitted for Claire!  I haven't knitted in many a year, but I found a simple pattern and it all came back to me.  Her blue coat is made of fleece, and the snowflakes are buttons from Joanns.

Under the coat, Claire is wearing an easy-to-make, long-sleeved tee-shirt with on which I embroidered a snowflake. The skirt is so simple--it's just a curve of felt with snaps on the back!  I added embroidery and beads to look like snow and tie in with the winter theme.

I'm really enjoying playing with my dolls!  Maybe we will see another Blythe clothing swap here soon
