101  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Fabric Jewelry--sign ups open on the swap board on: November 18, 2011 11:56:33 AM

Susanab has come up with another one of her great ideas for those of us who love fabric and sewing:  let's have a fabric jewelry swap!  There are tons of great ideas and tutorials on-line, like this for example.  Here are the things we are thinking of:

--pin/brooch (like the one pictured above)
--bracelet/cuff
--necklace
--earrings
--rings
--hair ornaments (including headbands)

We KNOW it's close to Christmas, that's why the crafting requirement will be:  Just. One. Item.

(Okay, you can include some small store-bought extras if you want.)

Sign-ups will start on Sunday Nov. 20; partners on Nov. 26; send outs Dec. 15.

I just KNOW you can fit this into your plans!  And if you have any other good fabric jewelry ideas, please mention them below.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year—it’s Ninni Time!!
For this round of Ninni Monster crafting, you will be able to make a plush Ninni, or anything else you want.  What about a ninni t-shirt or tote bag?  A hoopla or a kitchen towel?  There is one requirement:  IT HAS TO BE CHRISTMAS OR WINTER THEMED (you will indicate which you prefer on your questionnaire).  (Personally, I’m dying for an Angel Ninni for the top of my Christmas tree!)

Read about Ninni and get the pattern at RevoluzZza

Check out more Ninnis at  this Flickr group

Visit the Gallery of Ninnis from the first Craftster swap in May.

Details of swap:
--You will have one partner
--You will make one Ninni-themed item and one additional small hand-crafted item (the second thing will also be Christmas or winter themed, but doesn’t have to involve a Ninni—but it can it you want to) for your partner.
--You will have a 3 1/2 week crafting time, from 11/12/11 to 12/7/11
--You are free to change the Ninni pattern to make it bigger or smaller; add anything you want to it, but don’t change the basic shape too much, or it won’t be a Ninni!

*PLEASE READ!*
- Ninnis get upset with flakers so if you aren't sure if you can do this swap, don't sign up.
- Must get delivery confirmation if sending within the U.S.
- If you must send late, let the organizers and your partner know ASAP.

103  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Holiday Ninni on: November 03, 2011 07:48:02 AM

They're baaaaa-aaack!!

Remember Ninni Monsters?  We had our first ninni swap in May, and it was a huge hit, with 49 crafters participating--and a lot of us had two partners, so that's a lot of ninnis!

For that swap the requirement was simply to craft a plush ninni for your partner.  This time we want to loosen up and say "anything goes"--you don't have to limit yourself to making a plushie--use the ninni image in other creative ways if you want to.  What about a ninni t-shirt or tote bag?  A hoopla or a kitchen towel?  But there is one requirement:  IT HAS TO BE HOLIDAY THEMED (your partner will indicate the holiday she celebrates on her questionnaire).

Susanab and I want to open sign-ups on Sunday, Nov. 6th, with partners announced on Saturday, Nov. 12th.  With send-outs on December 7th, that gives 3 1/2 weeks to craft a ninni-something and a small extra for one partner. Think of it as a holiday gift to yourself!

Go to RevoluzZza to read about the ninni and get the pattern.  You might also want to read about ninni on Susan's blog.  We hope you will join us--we'd hate for you to miss the fun!
104  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Scrap Happy Swap; send out by 11/30/11 on: October 26, 2011 03:58:05 AM

To go to the gallery, CLICK RIGHT HERE!

For those who love the look of scrappy patchwork, or those with waaaay too many fabric scraps, susanab and I present this swap! Usually, in the swaps we organize, we offer a pattern for the item that will be swapped; this time, we are offering a technique (the scrappy patchwork technique) that can be used to create anything you think your partner will like. I'm also offering an ENVELOPE OF BEAUTIFUL SCRAPS to get you started!  You will find the technique in two places on my blog:

Scrappy Patchwork Tutorial and Scrap Fabric Giveaway
http://lesliesartandsew.blogspot.com/2011/10/scrappy-patchwork-tutorial.html

Scrappy Snappy Pouch Tutorial
http://lesliesartandsew.blogspot.com/2011/10/scrappy-snappy-pouch-tutorial.html

You don't have to use the technique (or scraps) we offer, as long as you craft items that have lots of different fabrics in them!  The requirement for the swap would be two smalls or one medium item.  For those who think two smalls isn't enough, you may have two partners if you wish!

Just about anything you would make out of fabric could be made “scrappy”.  Here are the things I’m thinking about—what would you add to this list?
--potholder
--mug rug
--coffee mug cozy
--place mat
--table runner
--headband
--cuff bracelet
--snap pouch
--tote bag
--journal cover
--sofa pillow
--stuffed plushie
--pin cushion
--wallet
--drawstring bag
--crafter's apron
--card case
--iPod cozy

Details of swap:
--You will have a choice of one or two partners.
--You will make two small items or one medium item for each partner. A “small” is generally considered as something that takes under 2 hours to make; a “medium” something that takes 2-3 hours to make.
--You will have a 4 week crafting time, from 11/02/11 to 11/30/11
--You have creative freedom to use any fabric, any embellishment, any technique you want, as long as what you craft is “scrappy” (using at least 5 different fabrics) and suited to your partner’s tastes.
-- You will need to post in this thread at least once a week so we know you are still crafting with us.

*PLEASE READ!*
- No one like to be flaked on, so if you aren't sure if you can do this swap, don't sign up.
- You must get delivery confirmation if sending within the U.S., or a mailing receipt if sending elsewhere.

106  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Journal Cover Swap send out by 11/7/11 on: October 10, 2011 04:59:52 AM

Click HERE to go to the gallery

Let’s turn a cheap composition book into a nice, expensive-looking book by sewing a beautiful cover for it!  You can write in the book to your heart's content, and then when it is full you can take the cover off and put it on a fresh book. I have posted a tutorial on my blog.  The basic cover is easy to make, but it is the embellishing it to suit your partner that will be the fun part.

U.S. swappers will need to have a standard-size composition book (measuring 9 3/4 by 7 1/2 inches) to cover.  They are really cheap, and you can get them at any store with an office supply section; for people outside the U.S., you have the option of swapping metric-sized covers.  You will decide with your partner if you want to make covers for A4 or A5 notebooks.

This swap is brought to you by susanab and Leslieshappyheart!

Details of swap:
--You will have one partner
--You will make one Journal Cover and one additional small hand-crafted item for your partner (based on her wists, pinterest, etc).  You don't have to mail the composition book, since your partner already has one--just mail the cover, the small item, and any extras you might wish.
--You will have a 3 week crafting time, from 10/10/11 to 11/7/11
--You will find the tutorial for the Journal cover at Leslie's Art and Sew. The measurements in the tutorial are for standard composition books; if you are swapping metric-sized journals, you will need to change the measurements accordingly. You have creative freedom to use any fabric, any embellishment, any technique you want, as you make a cover to suit your partner’s tastes.
--Feel free to make any changes to the journal cover tutorial, or make up your own design.  Add or subtract any design element you wish.
--Before sending your cover, MAKE SURE IT FITS THE JOURNAL!!  Small variations in seam allowances can make a big difference in the final product, and no one wants to receive a cover that doesn’t fit.

*PLEASE READ!*

107  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Journal Cover on: October 07, 2011 05:39:14 AM

Swap thread HERE for this swap!!
I love to make lists and plan out my week, and I love to keep all my lists together in a nice book.  However, I have trouble writing in a nice book!  What if I mess it up?  I will have ruined a nice, expensive book!  I decided to get around this problem by turning a cheap composition book into a nice, expensive-looking book by sewing a beautiful cover for it.  I can write in the book to my heart's content, and then when it is full (or when I mess it up) I can take the cover off and put it on a fresh book.

Susanab and I want you to swap journal covers with us!  I have posted a tutorial on my blog.  The basic cover is easy to make, but it is the embellishing to suit your partner that will be the fun part.

Everyone will need to have a standard-size composition book (measuring 9 3/4 by 7 1/2 inches) to cover.  They are really cheap, and you can get them at any store with an office supply section; for people outside the U.S. you can order them from Amazon.com (and probably lots of other places too).  We would probably mail only the covers.

I got this idea from a tutorial for a passport cover; and there are lots of examples of journal covers on the internet.

We want to start sign-ups early next week--maybe Monday the 10th?--and assign partners about a week later; then 3 weeks of crafting time, with a send-out date around Nov. 7th.  Sound good??  Will you join us??
108  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Cutest Critters EVER! on: October 02, 2011 08:16:00 AM
The Mystery Critter swap is now in the "mystery revealed" stage (that means the gallery has been started!), so I can show my "critters"!  If you want to make your own, you can find the pattern for free on my blog:
http://lesliesartandsew.blogspot.com/2011/09/mystery-critters.html

First I made this beautiful mermaid, (I call her Merry) for my partner. I went crazy with the hair, sewing in shells and beads to simulate water droplets

She has a removable tail, because I wanted to stay true to the pattern, so she needed to have legs.

After I finished, and was busy admiring Merry, I remembered that my partner said she doesn't like "cutesy", and I was afraid Merry might fall into that category!  So it was back to the sewing table.  I decided to make this uber-awesome turtle for my partner, who has a turtle in her avatar.  Here's Ollie's front:

And here's Ollie's back.  I was really "in the zone" when I was crafting this, and the shell magically came together without a hitch!  Again, I wanted to stay true to the pattern, so I made Ollie with ears, but I didn't stuff them, and sewed them down flat against the back of his head:

Ollie has a little (polymer clay) snail friend on top of his head!

I wanted to make some basic critters that would be suitable for children (no buttons, strings, or anything hard or sharp and nothing that could pull off), and this is how they look.  The face and eyes are all wool felt, and the flower is cotton fabric.

I made this one to match the baby quilt my friend asked me to make for her granddaughter.  The heart is wool felt, as are the face and eyes:

I would love to see anything you make from my pattern!
109  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Pinwheel Baby Quilt in Pink and Green on: September 26, 2011 09:33:43 AM
I JUST finished this baby quilt for my friend's granddaughter. The colors were chosen to match the crib sheets and bumper pad purchased by the parents.  I went with the pinwheel pattern and lots of white to keep the feeling very light and airy.  The top is machine pieced, and all the quilting is done by hand.  There are 70 pinwheels; each one measures only 2.75" square!  They took a long time to make!  Once they were done, though, piecing the top together went quickly. The total quilt size is 36" by 48".

A closer look at this pink and green confection!

This is the label on the back of the quilt.  I made it by printing the words on paper from my computer, then tracing them by hand onto fabric using a light box.

I hope baby Barrett has sweet dreams under her quilt!
