1  Napkin skirt in Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by gouge on: May 28, 2009 11:34:54 PM
I made this skirt out of five old cloth napkins and a linen shirt, all from my favorite dollar-per-pound thrift store.  I didn't bother to unstitch the hems of the napkins, meaning I didn't have to hem anything except the waistband (I am lazy!).

The original materials:

More pictures!

The button and zipper were salvaged/thrifted as well.  I don't really know how to put in a zipper, and the buttonhole function wasn't working on my machine, but I muddled through.

Pocket!

2  leather blank book cover in Completed Projects by gouge on: January 02, 2008 10:04:19 PM
I made this as a holiday gift for my beau.  It was my first time doing anything with leather since stamping my initials onto a keychain as a little 4-H kiddie, and my machine was NOT happy with it.  But it'll have to get over it since I still have a lot of leather left over to make fun things with.

The finished product:

I didn't make the book inside.  I was originally going to take another stab at bookbinding, but I ran short on time and and bought a nice little sketchbook instead.

It began as very worn and stained jacket in my house's free box.  You can kind of see the d-rings I used for the closure.

In progress (clothespins have so many uses, have you noticed?):

More pictures with other books for scale and fun:

3  sort-of-but-not-really-christmas cards in Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General by gouge on: December 29, 2005 12:48:31 AM
I'm not really the christmas-card type...but I made a few cards this year around the holidays and sent them out, so I guess they fall under that category.  Here's some:

The girl is saying "so be good for goodness sake"  and the bear is saying "people look ridiculous when they're in ecstacy" (so says David Byrne, and I guess I agree).

4  Embroidered owl journal in Paper Crafts: Completed Projects: General by gouge on: December 23, 2005 10:53:09 PM
I made this for my friend's birthday.  She likes owls.
It was my first attempt at both embroidery and bookbinding, so there are lots of little mistakes, but it works pretty well overall.

The fabrics are all recycled (the velvet is from my great-grandmother's curtains!), and I used an old game board to make the covers stiff, so I guess this could also go under reconstructed.

5  Corvus brachyrhynchos and stripes in Clothing: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by gouge on: April 12, 2005 05:16:08 PM
This was formerly a baggy, long-sleeved, high-necked top.  I ripped out the bottom hem, made it smaller, rolled up the sleeves, cut the binding from the neck to make the tabs at the sleeves, hemmed the neck (SUCH a pain), added buttons from my mom's button box, and finally stenciled a crow on it.  The stencil is kind of wonky but it worked better than I expected.
