11  Spring Doll Quilt in Quilting: Completed Projects by gwensmom on: May 16, 2008 06:07:03 AM
For the Four Seasons Quilt Swap.  It's made of thrifted clothes and some Kona Cotton.

I put some triangular pockets on the quilt so the recipient can insert a dowel for hanging.  A tutorial on this technique is here.  It's really easy to do.

This was my second attempt at a quilt for this swap.  Here is the one that didn't work out.

12  old clothes + color-savvy husband + Vogue pattern = really cute new bag in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by gwensmom on: April 12, 2008 07:53:40 PM
I needed a bag for a swap so I started pulling out thrifted clothes from my stash.  Gwensdad paired these two prints for me:

I used Vogue 8406 view B.  As is common in Vogue patterns, it had a million pieces but the effort was worth it.

This bag took up a lot of fabric, so I had to use scraps from another project to line the inside pocket and for the lining bottom.

This bag is currently winging it's way to Australia and will cross paths with a bag made there for me!

13  St. Patrick's Day bibs in Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects by gwensmom on: March 06, 2008 06:13:03 PM
For babies of Irish ancestry and those who are not but want to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in style!  These bibs are backed with a coordinating shamrock print and there is a layer of nylon inside to prevent moisture from soaking through.

14  gorgeous new bag from skirt and jacket in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by gwensmom on: February 16, 2008 12:55:07 PM
This turned out so well!  It will be a birthday gift for a friend.

I used a thrifted corduroy skirt and linen jacket with McCall's 3772 view B

To make this bag:

Here is what the bag looks like open

The lining is made from the jacket linen and I used one of the jacket pockets for an inside pocket.

15  Winter Doll Quilt for swap in Quilting: Completed Projects by gwensmom on: February 07, 2008 10:10:03 PM
This is what I made for the "Winter" project in the Four Seasons Quilt Swap.  The design is based on a block in a quilt hanging in my LQS.  The tree trunks are pieced, the green triangles are appliqueed and the whole thing is machine quilted.

(The quilt is not crooked - I was holding the camera at an angle)

18  Quilted Cat Postcards in Quilting: Completed Projects by gwensmom on: September 16, 2007 03:43:31 PM
These were made for a swap on nervousness.org.  I had drooled over other people's fabric postcards for years but never tried to make any.  This was a really fun project and not difficult at all.

For directions I googled "fabric postcards" and found plenty of help.  For these cards, I fused the cats onto the backgrounds and fused the backgrounds onto some thick Pellon.  Then I quilted it and fused two more pieces of muslin to the back of the Pellon.   All that was left was to square it up to 4" x 6" with a rotary cutter and satin stich the edges.  I used wonder under for the fusing.

You can actually mail these.  The USPS requires that you write the word "Postcard" on the blank side.

Does anyone else make these?  If so, show us the goods!

19  Felt cookies with icing and sprinkles in Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects by gwensmom on: August 02, 2007 06:44:18 AM
My cousin E is two today so I make her some food for her play kitchen.

I fused the icing on with wonder under but stitched around the edges with pink thread so it would withstand whatever E dishes out.  For the same reason, I machine stitched and pinked the edges.  A blanket stitch would have looked better but this is a 2 year old so we had to go for durability.

20  Gigantic plastic crochet beach bag in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: Reconstructed by gwensmom on: July 30, 2007 07:57:57 PM
I got tired of throwing out the plastic bags that come on our newpaper every day.  The city doesn't accept them for recycling (they are #4) so I used them to practice some newly acquired crochet skillz.  Some white shopping bags are thrown in for variety.

Here's a close up of some orange crochet action

There was no pattern- it is just made up as I went along.  I started the bag in mid-January and used 6 months worth of bags.  It was interesting to crochet about 7 inches every day and then wait for more "yarn" to show up in the driveway the next morning.  (And to get all excited when rain was expected and the paper was double bagged!)

Blogged here: http://gwenshouse.wordpress.com/2007/07/30/plastic-bag-crochet
And shown at about 4:10 on a Threadbanger episode http://www.threadbanger.com/episode/THR_20070810
