1  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Re: Handmade for a Long-Distance Boyfriend HELP PLEASE on: November 29, 2011 01:30:57 PM
My boyfriend and I are long-distance too (laaaammmee...). Anyway, I have the stereotypical ice-cold girl feet that I always rub against his when we're together.  It sounds cheesy, but I made us each a pair of socks using the same yarn so that it's sort of like he's still helping out with his furnace skills. Through yarn...I don't really know.
2  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Misc. Gift Idea Brain Blockage / Mad Men Kit on: November 29, 2011 01:26:09 PM
I've been trying to come up with a Christmas present for my boyfriend for what seems like forever, but I've finally decided to make him a Mad Men kit. I've come up with some items for it, but I would really appreciate any suggestions you all might have. He has an affinity for all thing Don Draper, so even though these things are small I think with a cute presentation it will be fun.

The man, the myth, the legend. Super cool print from christinaperry87.

Here's whats I gots:

Monogrammed tie bar

Don's sunglasses

Sterling's Gold

Tie (Chargers colors, of course, because it's impossible to do a totally sports-free gift for the guy) that I'm going to make skinny

Candy cigarettes

Plastic jockey helmet for his very own Derby party

Chip & Dip. Unfortunately much less awesome than the original.

Any other essentials I seem to be missing?

Amazing. Total geek crafter porn. If you don't win this challenge I'm pouting on your behalf.
4  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Re: Frankenstein's Monster Face (FrankenFace) Bag on: October 20, 2011 09:14:22 AM
The bolts in the neck are killing me! Love that the mouth is a pocket, too.
5  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Pretty Preppy Zippered Pouches on: October 20, 2011 09:13:19 AM
My love for zippered pouches knows no bounds. My roommates may or may not be calling the appropriate authorities to deal with this problem. Stay tuned.

In other news, these somehow, um, popped up in my room recently. Weird. My boyfriend lives 5 hours away and I've been complaining about needing bags for makeup and stuff on these visits, so it's actually great timing for them.

The little one was made using queenofdiy's cosmetic bag tutorial. It looks a lot better in person and also when it's not laying flat on my bed and shot from straight on (it's rainy today, bad lighting, blah blah blah).  The second was made using a Flossie Teacakes tutorial.

This is what I meant by bad lighting. Boo. Still obsessed with the fabric, though.

Top of the smaller queenofdiy bag. Pretty overexposed lining, right?

There we go, that picture is looking better! This is the larger Flossie Teacakes bag.

By far the best part of these is their nesting ability. I think a series of nesting pouches is in my future. Would 10 be excessive?

So awesome.
7  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / Legends of the Hidden Temple Purse on: October 19, 2011 03:23:11 PM
For Halloween this year, my boyfriend decided that we'll be going as a team from the greatest children's game show of all time: Legends of the Hidden Temple.  While I'm thrilled at the opportunity to achieve an unfulfilled childhood dream (i.e. kicking butt as a Green Monkey), I'm also a girl and will need to lug stuff around to parties/across the moat and through the Temple. My boyfriend suggested I wear a fanny pack.

I stared at him for a solid 15 seconds before asking if he was serious.

When he said he was, I reminded myself that I love him despite the fact that he doesn't understand clothing.  I could just carry a normal wristlet, but since I was deprived of my annual tradition of sewing my own costume I decided to make something even better.  I needed something to fit the theme, though. Something small and representative of the show that the contestants carried around with them.

Boom. Pendant of Life.

I searched high and low for a tutorial for the purse I was picturing and finally stumbled upon GeekySweetheart's Travel Embroidery Case (http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=380923.0).  Awesomeness then ensued.

Giraffe flannel lining. Both Legends-y AND sure to elicit a laugh from the boyfriend, who thinks my love of giraffes is odd.

I had a little bit of trouble with the strap since I wasn't putting it in the same spot as the tutorial showed. I eventually settled on 2 lines of stitching to make the seam mostly sort of flat.

9  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Re: Non-hideous knitting pillow on: October 19, 2011 03:15:56 PM
So pretty! I would loooovee a pattern, my back pillow is both pink corduroy and currently falling apart.
10  KNITTING / Knitting: Discussion and Questions / Re: The things no one tells you before you become a knitter. on: October 19, 2011 03:11:20 PM
- No one tells you that everyone will want you to make them one just like the one you made for yourself or soinso, and then gawk in disbelief when you tell them how much time/effort/money it will take.

Amen.

* No one tells you that you will get hand cramps/callouses from holding yarn to tension it and then get odd looks when you explain that you hurt yourself crafting.
