I have made a lot of dog coats for a lot of different breeds of dogs. In my experience, you need to shape the coat to the dog's back end with darts in order to keep it in place. Where the darts are placed and how many you need depends on the dog's shape. Sometimes one in the center back in the last third of the seam before the tail end is enough, although I usually use 2 on the sides as well about 2/3 of the way down. Maybe play around with a vest cut out of some throw away fabric to get it right before you try it on your vests.

Another way to keep it in place is with 2 straps crossed underneath the belly like you see on the Foggy Mountain dog coats.

And your suit looks so finely tailored to him

I had to experiment a bit to get it to fit him - he is a bit of a funny shape, quite barrel chested even though he is quite skinny. The rejects went to a friend whose dog has a smaller chest - they fit him perfectly.

And you know, I've always wanted to make clothes for my dog

Give it a try - I based my pattern loosely on this one

The one piece suit from this pattern is pretty simple to make - it's a good one to start with.

It's finally warming up here in the Pacific Northwest - it has been unseasonally cold and Jose' has needed a jogging suit and a coat on when he goes out for a walk. Today it is warm enough for him to wear his new spring outfit.

The shirt is made from a green, navy, and white striped tank top that I no longer wore. I lined it with white jersey knit for a little more warmth. The pants are made from navy polar fleece that I dressed up a bit with a bone applique with his name embroidered on it.

It's my own design, based loosely on this one

I decided I wanted it to look like it was a hoodie and jogging pants so I made the 2 pieces and then sewed them together at the waist as the last step.

It is quite easy to sew but getting the fit right can be a little tricky.

That's lovely, great fabric choice.

I made one of these using a Sunbrella type outdoor fabric and it is holding up very well. It is outside on the patio in spring, summer, and fall and is used for an inside bed for the winter months.

Your dog is beautiful - how old is he/she?

It's open underneath from the chest down so no problem with pottying
