1  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Help with sewing a basic dress from cotton and recommendations? on: November 03, 2011 06:57:17 AM
Hi there!
So a few months ago I made a dress from a pattern for the very first time and it looked like this:

http://katburns.wordpress.com/2011/06/10/i-made-this-in-my-new-studio/
(yes yes, I know you can see through it, the bottom wasn't lined...)

I found that this dress, even though it was "easy" it was tricky and didn't fit quite right. The waist sort of went empire styles and the chest was too wide.  I am going to try it again with a non sheer fabric to see if it makes it a bit easier (less slippery) and keep at it.

BUT I was also wondering if anyone has some ideas or favourite very simple dresses to make? I'm not rich at the moment so if I can make it out of thrifted cotton or bedsheets that would be ideal. Something that is flattering on ma bod but also very simple and something that could be dressed up or down. I wear dresses 90% of the time and I spent a lot of time touring in a stinky van, so if it's comfy, bonus!

Please share your thoughts, ideas and experiences. If you have photos that is even better for my brain.

thanks!

(also, I don't have a serger so I'm not sure I can make things that are meant to be made with jersey knit. unless there is a secret?)
2  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / My first wallhanging on: October 11, 2011 04:06:25 PM
This is my second attempt actually, but my first one where I actually used a fuse/liner inside. I made this little wall hanging for my sister's birthday. I wanted it to look a little like a mismatched patchwork of pieces.

She and I love birds and I hope she likes it!

Any tips or constructive criticism?
