1  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Beginner on wheel questions on: November 29, 2006 04:57:05 PM
So I am extremely lucky and I got an old (I think 1940s or '50s) Ashford spinning wheel for free, and my dad the engineer managed to fix it up (it was in pieces) and get it running for me, but I'm having trouble with the actual spinning. I've spun on a drop spindle and after wrestling with the wheel for a month I have all the parts figured out, but the wool doesn't spin before it's pulled through the orifice. I've been tightening and loosening the drive band, but nothing seems to help. Also, sometimes the flyer doesn't fly even though the wheel is spinning--the drive band just slides around it. Lastly, sometimes the footman will stick where it connects to the wheel--not because it needs oil, it just doesn't want to continue going around in the direction I want it to. I also sometimes have a hard time getting the wheel to go with the treadle; the wheel will spin on its own but I have to get it started with my hand and then start treadling. Does anyone have any suggestions? Do I just need to practice? Thanks for any help you can offer.
2  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Baby Showers And Gifts For New Babies / Korean Baby Shower Ideas? on: September 06, 2006 12:43:56 PM
My mom and I are planning a baby shower for her sister, who is adopting a baby boy from Korea. (We get him Friday! I can't wait!) I've had a hard time finding information about Korean baby traditions (although I haven't had a whole lot of time to look). We would really like to have at least some Korean aspect to the shower. Any information or ideas would be awesome and greatly appreciated.
