21  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Doctor Who Swap Round 4 SENDOUTS 12-10-10!!! on: November 21, 2010 09:35:29 AM
http://riptapparel.com/ Today only, just saying.
Oh man! This one, I couldn't resist. And I don't even really wear t-shirts out that much. But I think I'm gonna be a bit giddy when it comes in the mail. I love the tardis... siiigh

Don't get me wrong, I live for this shtuff, by my poor hands are su-fer-ing. Anyone have any tips on relieving/avoiding hand pain?
Hm. It's not quite the same thing, but I am working all the time on the computer. And while the tools you use can help a lot (i've read about people switching brands of crochet needles and having a difference, or switching to a certain rotary cutter...), I think making sure to take frequent breaks is important. I remember my physical therapist friend telling me that when I'm on my computer, I should make sure to get up out of my chair and move around a bit, even if just for a second, every 20 MINUTES!! I definitely don't do that... I really should. So yeah. I think even if you are "in the zone" with your projects, make sure to  stop, put your stuff down, and move your fingers and wrists and stretch things out Smiley

and I'll see if my sister (she's in PT school) has more advice.

Wow! Thanks for all the angel love!
If any of you make angel costumes in the future, I'd LOVE to see them!!

Wait... An image of an Angel becomes an Angel.
Darn! You've discovered my plot for world domination - to get angels on computer screens all around the world!!! ahahaha

Brilliant id! Gotta love those creepy angels =)
Now, more pictures of the dress!
I promise it isn't a very exciting dress, but I'll try to get some additional pictures up this weekend and add it to the first post, yeah?

Getting started on Christmas shopping now is an excellent idea
but I have absolutely no idea what to get for people!! Arg!!

In honor of the Series 5 marathon on Saturday,
(which I suppose is really honoring the release of the dvds)
howabout we all share our favorite episode from Series 5?
It may help out our future swapping partner too  Grin
It'd probably make more sense to do this AFTER Saturday
so all the eps are fresh in our minds, but oh well. ahahah

It's a hard choice, but I think my favorite may have to be Vincent and the Doctor  Smiley

Anyone know if/when BBC America will be airing Eccleston's "Naked Lennon"? If it has a US air date, I want to try to DVR it.
I'm in the US, and it's on our public broadcasting station. You should definitely be able to DVR it. If you don't know your local PBS station, their website has a feature to look for local listings. It will also be available to stream online from the PBS website November 22 - December 21, 2010 in case y'all miss it  Grin

And I loooooved Pushing Daisies. I had a huge crush on Ned. He's gonna be in the new Twilight movie. Kinda weird, but I'll be happy to see him on the big screen any day Smiley

I feel a bit silly asking, but where would we look to check about feedback?
Is it just the "Participation Status" in our profile?

and

I was watching Masterpiece Mystery tonight on PBS- Sherlock is so great BTW - and they had an ad for next week... "Lennon Naked" starring Christopher Eccleston as John Lennon and it's hosted by David Tennant!!! 2 Doctors and Beatle-y goodness?!! I'm a just a bit giddy at the moment!

Thanks so much you guys!!!  Grin
and now for a few answers...

WOW!!! what material is this made out of... it looks VERY statuey
The wings were made of foam core and cardboard, and the dress was some material I had in my bin... I bought it a few years back for an Arwen costume I never made, so I don't remember exactly what it is, but it was navy and fuzzy like velvet, but much cheaper more lightweight, kinda like that fireproof kid's pajama material? oof. I'm not helping much am I? Well, either way, when I painted it, I didn't use fabric medium, so it made the material nice and stiff

Wow, that is amazing costume!!! I can tell it took a great deal of time, but was the cost factor worth it?
...
I really am impressed with your wing set, so what changes did you make to be able to get into the dress without help?
Well, cost in terms of money was pretty low because I ended up using a lot of stuff I already had. The foam core boards were from presentations I had done in college, the fabric was from a costume I never ended up making (I think it was bargain fabric too), the paint, the elastic, the glue... all of it I already had. The only purchases I made were a hula hoop and a cheap backpack, both from the 99 cent store, and some Ben Nye body paint, which was probably the most expensive thing!

Sure it took a long time to make, and I suppose time is money, but it was a fun crafty project to do!!  I kinda look at my costumes as a chance to make something I find exciting and to challenge myself. And I too don't really like to repeat costumes - hehe - but I don't have to make more than one a year  Wink

My dress was actually a top and separate skirt, because I figured that would be much easier to deal with getting in and out of. As for my wings, they were super lightweight! You could see the straps from the front when they were on, but creating something that went under the dress was just not practical. So in the end, I just put them on like a backpack (lifting them up and putting them on a higher surface did make the process a bit easier too!)

Hope that helps! If you guys have any more questions, ask away!!  Grin
