I first started begging boyfriend to be the Eddie to my Columbia last year when he was Elton John and I was a pirate. I have to admit, I have always had a thing for Eddie and Columbia has always been adorable and bad-ass in my eyes.
I started on my costume months before and he kept dragging his butt until we both got an invite to our friend's annual Halloween party *gulp* 17 days earlier than we thought it was going to be. He hadn't even bought a jacket at that point and I had the majority of my costume together. We had less than a week to pull this all together and lemme tell ya, we were still rushing around working on our outfits THE DAY OF the party. There was much crankyness and some snapping at each other but we survived, and this is the end result. There are obviously things missing but we did the best we could with the time we had. I am happy with it all.
Do you want a breakdown of the costumes? Sure you do! I can tell...
My costume (Columbia):
-The hat was one that I bought from a hat website I somehow found on the net and then I hot-glued black ribbon for the band.
-I dyed my hair red using Clairol Jazzing Ruby Red, after first bleaching it.
-My younger sister helped with my makeup. I covered my eyebrows up with glue stick and then put makeup on top to blend. The glue was a bit too hard for what I needed and it got lumpy. Next time I'll get a new stick.
-The bow tie was one that my ex gf gave me in high school when she worked at a movie theater. I just painted it with glitter glue and it came out better than I expected.
-The top was one I found on Etsy.com. The colors aren't exact, the cut isn't right but I am not paying something like $50 a yard (http://www.homeofhappiness.com/fabric/) for the authentic sequin fabric. I might someday but right now I can't afford that.
-The shorts are actually a great thrift store find. I scoured thrift stores for black high-waisted shorts right when they were packing away all of their summer gear. I finally found the ones pictured, but they were originally skorts. I cut the skirt part off of the outside and then glued metallic ribbons on them using fabric glue.
-I got the fishnets and blue socks at Walmart and I already owned the shoes. I know they are not exact at all but my budget was already maxed out and they looked close-ish.
Boyfriend's costume (Eddie):
-He bought a mullet wig and then cut the back off. That was entirely his idea and I was proud of him. That was smart and it worked very well!
-Makeup and fake tattoo was done by my younger sister.
-His shirt was a thrift store find of his. He cut off the sleeves because it was originally a long sleeve and then I painted "Eddie" on it with white acrylic paint.
-The jacket: This was by far the biggest part of the outfit and I invested most of the time for his costume in it. I first found a template for the "Baby" lettering on the top of the back, traced the template off of my computer screen on some paper (because the printer was acting up), cut out the letters, taped them on the jacket, outlined them in chalk, and then painted it on using enamel. I then free-handed the rising sun design on the bottom of the back using enamel. What you may not see is that halfway through painting the sun, I spilled gold paint right below the lettering. I almost cried. I got most of it off with fingernail polish remover and then painted over the rest of it with black enamel. Whew. After that, boyfriend attached the chain to the back with jump rings and instruction from me. I then created the animal print lapels by covering a cut-out of the shape (I used an old record jacket) with animal print fabric that boyfriend got at Walmart and then hot-gluing them to the jacket. We got some holographic and silver plastic stars from Walmart and then hot-glued those on the jacket.
-For the wallet chain, boyfriend just looped some extra chain he got from Walmart in his belt loops.
-He just wore some of his jeans he already had and wore a pair of boots he owned. He tied an extra piece of animal print fabric to his ankle because Eddie has animal print on the top of his boots.
A little sweet tidbit to end with:
My favorite part of the whole night is when he grabbed me in the kitchen (we were both pretty drunk by that point) and started singing Wonderful Tonight (our song) and slow dancing with me. <3
