1  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Beginner Spinner on: September 02, 2010 06:21:17 PM
So as I posted on the Learn To Spin 2010 boards, I finally received my spinning kit off Etsy today.  I can't express how excited I was to get the kit and to learn how to spin... I constantly talked about it to my BF (much to his dismay), read up on FAQ's, watched YouTube videos...

And then I got my materials. Quickly photographed them, and went downstairs to begin the pre-drafting and finally get started on learning to spin.

What a lesson in humility.

I live in a very non-crafty city, we have a Michael's and two dedicated yarn stores run by moms and pops.. so there's really no one I can go to here for tips and tricks and support.

So far, I'm finding my spinning to be very un-even.  I was having trouble keeping the roving even while drafting, as I would be pulling slowly and then all of a sudden it would come apart.  I'm not entirely sure if I'm doing everything right, and still don't know what to do past 'spin it counter-clockwise on your spindle, and as you're going along, wind it under the whorl' since that's where many tutorials seem to stop.

Does anyone have any tried and true methods to learn how to spin for the first time? Any horror stories? I see all of the beautiful yarns on here, and then look at my jumbled twisty mess and wonder what I'm doing wrong! Tongue
