I got the idea from this post from about 6 years ago.
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=82588.0So I decided to make a few changes so that they could be completely unrolled and washed for maximum cleanliness!
Here are pics, and if anyone would like to know how to make them, just let me know! I made these from a 70% bamboo/30% silk mixed yarn. They smell kinda like wet straw when they were wet with water. I looked up tampon absorbency online and 15ml/15g is the maximum absorbency for a SUPER PLUS tampon. In case you didn't know it goes, light, regular, super, super plus and then ultra. I personally have never even needed a super plus tampon but this little, soft flexible tampon that I made sucked up 15g of fluid in about 10 seconds and wicked it to the center of the roll! It was awesome!
I had also made one out of cotton and I left it in 15g of water for almost 3 hours and it barely absorbed half of the water and the center was still dry. I would rather know that the tampon will hold a heavy flow if needed.
~~~~~~~~~~~UPDATE~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After washing the cotton tampon it also absorbed the same amount of water in the same amount of time as the bamboo. So the cotton won't absorb until its washed which I suspected might be the case. The bamboo becomes to soft after washing to insert and kind of collapses on itself but the cotton holds up really well.
There is a little hole to hold the string so that the tampon won't unroll during insertion or removal.
