Thanks for your help.  6mm seam allowances sound good to me! Smiley

Well, I just figured out my ear question.  I was just thinking about putting the ear in facing the wrong way (duhh).  I don't even know how to explain what I'm talking about so I won't!

Also, the calendar is neat, my Mum got it for me.  It has a craft project for every month.  It has some cute stuff like a stuffed owl and elephant, and some knitted stuff.  It's called Get Crafty, published by the ink group.

Oh well, hope some more help is on its way.  By the way, how many plastic pellets do I put in?

Oh interesting!  I've never been part of a swap before, and don't really know all the ins and outs of them, but I would love to see what everyone comes up with!
p.s It's all about Kaiden, I didn't even cheat on him in Mass Effect 2!

Hi, I am new to making stuffed stuff!  I have made one thing before, a hedgehog pincushion out of felt.  It was quite fun Smiley
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=364456.msg4279752#msg4279752

I have this pattern from a calendar for this cute little dog!

So I have some questions for you experts.  The pattern doesn't include seam allowances.  (side-note, why is that?)  So when I add my own (I suppose I'll trace the pattern with added ones), how big am I supposed to make them?  It's a pretty small pattern, I measured 18cm (7 inches) from top to bottom.

Also, it says to "place plastic pellets into the bottom of the body".  I suppose that's for weighting?  And how many do I place?  I don't even know what these plastic pellets look like!

If you guys could help it'd be sooo appreciated.  I think I need to learn more basics.  Does anyone have any helpful suggestions for me?  That'd be great Smiley

One more question, reading the instructions it tells you to place the ear 3mm from the edge of the head, then later when you stitch the head together to secure the ears as you go.  They appear to be sewn into the seam in the picture....I am confused!

Thanks again for your help!!

Thanks for all the positive feedback!  It's awesome to hear!  I think I will put some tips I found when making him.  I can even sort out a template for the 2nd layer of its coat if anyone wanted it Smiley

I know it's not as impressive as all the cool stuff everyone else on this forum is making but I thought at least it might inspire a fellow beginner!
I copied the idea from this person, I found it through google:

The pattern is also linked within.

And here is the thread I made in the wrong forum (lol) in which I got help from a kind member (thought it might be useful to a beginner Smiley)

And here is my hedgehog, I'm proud! Haha

If you wanted to make it I would perhaps put a 2nd layer of felt or a slightly smaller bit of cardboard (to accomodate stitching) in the base.  Just because I found it had a little bit of a bulgy bottom!  Also I could get the template for the 2nd (brown) layer out there if anyone needed it.  I just made it about 2mm bigger than the white layer.

Also big thanks to peihan17 for helping me along the way  Smiley

Edit: Added some small tips for anyone wanting to make it Smiley

Yay I finally finished it Smiley
Learning blanket stitch and whip stich was fun.. It makes me want to make more stuff, though I have no idea what!

Well here she is Smiley  I'm a bit proud.

Thanks for all your help Peihan Smiley

I think I'll put it in the right forum as well, in toys completed projects..  Tongue

Well I have experienced exactly what you were saying about things looking different once it's stuffed!  The second layer I cut out did not cooperate at all!  I suppose I should have sewn the brown to the white as my first step before I stuffed it...?

So....can I save my hedgehog?  I guess I need to cut out more felt...how do I get its little brown coat to fit?

The brown felt is all puckered  Tongue

I have begun!  Hooray!  And now I have 2 more questions! Haha.

Just wondering, will the bottom of the hedgehog bulge outwards when I stuff it?  I want it to be relatively flat so it can stand up.  Should I put some card or an extra layer of felt in or will it be fine?

And one more thing, just wondering why people put stuff like ears on after it's been stuffed, it confuses me a little.  Surely it's easier to just sew it on when it's just a flat piece of felt?  Hmm, is it because it bulges outwards once it's stuffed?  Does that affect the stitches?

Sorry for all the questions!
