4  CLOTHING / Clothing: Discussion and Questions / Beginner questions about making a top out of jersey on: December 18, 2010 12:42:31 PM
I've done very little sewing and have never made clothes before. I want to make a simple tank top out of some jersey I have to hand as a first project  Cheesy

What is the difference between 'jersey' and 'jersey knit'?

How do you tell what the stretch is, esp e.g. when comparing two fabrics

What is the difference between sewing this and 'normal' cotton? (other than using a different needle) How do I handle the seams - everything done in stretch stitch?

Any other advice?

You need to post more stuff, just for the commentary  Cheesy

I wasn't a fan of it on the rail, but it looks fantastic on! Well done Smiley

I would pay ridicuous amounts to be able to do this!

I was really upset when I discovered that 'She-Ra' wasn't an acceptable career choice Sad
7  MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS / Completed Projects / Crazy-quilting inspired star-pillow thingy on: December 07, 2010 09:37:10 AM
I'm still novice enough to be finding new bits on my sewing machine (Clive!) so this is still a pretty basic project - only the fourth thing I've made.

Trying desperately to use up all the hideous material I've inherited Cheesy

Made sans pattern, with embroidered (inc French knot) flowers, and sewn on sequins and seed beads - none of which I've done before - so this is very much a 'sampler'! I did intend to quilt it and use decorative stitching but 1) my machine doesn't have decorative stitches and it was never going to be good enough to merit doing it by hand 2) I've yet to master fine control over guiding the machine and 3) I wanted to get it done and over with as It's been half finished for weeks

The colours are much brighter in real life. Although I liked the denim strip at first, when sewn together, it's made it looks a bit... country? Will try and stick better pictures up when I find my camera cable that got lost when I moved

More like the actual colours

You look fantastic!

You did a great job on the dress and the sleeves, and I'm jealous that you're able to wear stripes (I'd end up looking like an overfed zebra in this Cheesy )
