1  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / Craft Hope Project 11 on: February 06, 2011 12:21:03 PM
I don't know how many of you have heard of crafthope.com, but their current project is sending safe birthing kits to the organization Konbit Sante in Haiti.

From crafthope:  "Even before the earthquake, Haitis health statistics were dismal, and now the need is even greater.  Shockingly, one in eight Haitian children dies before the age of five, and their maternal mortality rate is 1,400 deaths for every 100,000 a  reflection of the fact that the majority of the population lives in poverty/on less than a dollar a day. Only one in every 10,000 Haitians has access to a physician."

Contents of safe birthing kit:

1 small bar of soap (updated 1/16/2011)
1 piece of clean plastic sheeting (3 feet wide by 4 feet long)
1 piece of clean string, 24 inches long
1 packet alcohol wipe
1 set of sterile latex gloves
1 packet (or travel container) Purelle
1 handmade tote bag

Optional:
receiving blanket36 inches square
small stuffy toy

These kits are an easy project that can strongly impact the lives of women and children with limited medical access in Haiti.

These sites do a much better job explaining what this is all about:

2  CRAFTING FOR GOOD AND NOT EVIL / Crafty Charitable/Social Causes / Project Thrive- reusable pads for girls on: December 07, 2010 10:45:14 AM
Hello, everyone.  I'm no sewer, but I read about Project Thrive in Bust magazine this month, and it would be a really great opportunity for sewers here to give a great gift.

From the magazine: "According to UNICEF, 1 in 10 African girls skip class during their periods, and the make shift alternative to pads they use, like mattress stuffing and newspaper, cause infections.  But it is time spent out of the classroom that poses the biggest threat to these girls, setting them up for a lifetime of inequality."

Project Thrive's "Days for Girls" is sending packages to these girls that include:

2 moisture barrier shields (wrap to panties to hold pads)
10 absorbent flannel pads (tri-fold design dries fast, all styles welcome)
1 pair of panties (Misses size 5 or 7)
1 washcloth
2 small bars of soap
2 one-gallon size Ziploc baggies for wet or soiled items
2 safety pins (to resize panties if necessary, clasp shields in case snaps fail with age)
Cloth drawstring bag to contain kit

They need donations of washable pads ( The website includes a sewing pattern!) and the other supplies as well (for we who are sewing machine incompetent) !

Let's get these girls back in school and feeling great about themselves!
Happy Holidays, everyone  Cheesy

3  PAPER CRAFTS, SCRAPBOOKING & ATCs (ARTIST TRADING CARDS) / Scrapbooking: Discussion and Questions / Letter Writing Journal on: November 16, 2010 02:26:27 PM
I got the idea to make a letter writing journal.  It would be somewhere where I could store received letters (I can never throw them away) and makes lists of people I need to write to/have received from.  I bought a composition notebook today, and I am ready to get started!  I think I'll include a pocket in the inside cover for stamps and an address section.  What other features do you all think it should have?  I already have an idea for decorating the cover Wink
