11  Dinosaur felt embroidery (inspired by LimeRiot) in Needlework: Completed Projects by AlmostDawn on: June 27, 2011 07:35:11 PM
Since last fall I've been building a Hoopla wall. I've always wanted to fill an entire wall with art and this seemed like a great way to have *two* walls. Did you know that one could go about building a Hoopla wall without having a single hoop of your own creation on it. Well....you can. 'Cause somehow I was.

Fixed that. With a quickness.

Lime posted an amazing tutorial on these boards for felt embroidery. I'd always used felt for stuffies and cat toys and really never considered putting it in a hoop.

After I saw her tutorial I knew that I wanted to do something with my felt. And since my Hoopla wall was lacking...it just seemed perfect. It was just going to be a normal round hoop with the dinosaur but when I was digging through my hoop basket I saw that oval hoop that had been abandoned there forever. So...this hoop came about.

Thank you Lime for the awesome tutorial. It was super fun and I have a whole new way to use felt now!

15  Psyduck (or How 1/4" squares made me crazy) in More Art, Less Craft: Completed Works by AlmostDawn on: June 13, 2011 06:26:53 PM
I've worked a lot with Perler beads in the past but when the Pokemon swap came around I wanted to do something different for my partner.

I decided to use hand-cut squares of paper to form my image. Winged_soul listed Psyduck as one of her favorite pokemon and I knew that I could break him down pretty easily.

I broke my canvas down into a 1" grid. Then I did a little math with my nifty Paint image and the space available and realized that I'd need to make my paper squares......1/4".

Clearly, I have trouble visualizing the size of something accurately.

I measured. And measured again. I thought that I had messed something up and had my husband do the math. Nope. 1/4". And although my husband said I was crazy, I cut tiny little squares.

It was....maddening. The moment it was finished I made some silly statement about "not doing that again".

Strange that I've already started putting down a grid on another canvas.  Wink

17  My first embroidery - Key to my Heart in Needlework: Completed Projects by AlmostDawn on: June 02, 2011 06:07:38 PM
I've always been a cross-stitch girl. I love having nothing to think about but x's.

I've been participating in the various rounds of the Hoopla swap and this round I was struck with the desire to do embroidery. (I must have been crazy...or caffeine-deprived)

Pattern from Urban Threads (every time they had a sale I'd grab a pattern or two just for artistic inspiration, now I'm glad I did)

It's certainly not as refined as I'd like. But it's my first embroidery hoop and I feel like I've opened a new door of crafting.  Grin

I got my package from pinkleo today!
I couldn't have been more excited. I ran in the house, past my husband and dove on the bed to open it up (I like to open things on the bed...cause I can bounce around when I get excited....and if I drop something there's no damage!  Grin )

First thing I noticed was gummi bears...which were opened before I even remembered to take a picture:

Sender's choice = Fabric:

With monkey fabric. Oh man do I absolutely love monkey fabric. I have a box full of it....some day I'll think of something awesome to do with it.

Something vintage = toy patterns + M = MORE patterns:

I've *just* recently started making stuffed toys and such so these will be SOOO useful.

Something cozy = Cookie tape measure + Something sharp = Pretty pins with a pincushion:

The pincushion is so beautiful. I love the fabric choices. And I can't work with yarn at all so I'm just awed by the tape measure cover.

Lastly something bumpy= stress ball:

It's already in my bag to go to work with me tomorrow. The saying on it is so true.

Thank you so very much pinkleo! This was an awesome swap. I'm thrilled with my whole package. <3

She sent me a whole color spectrum of fabrics which I absolutely love. And halloween kitties! (I totally sent a pic of just that fabric to my mom who threatened to drive 5 hours to steal it)

Thank you so very much!

20  Re: A Song of Ice and Fire/ George R. R. Martin Swap Round 2 Gallery in The Swap Gallery by AlmostDawn on: May 14, 2011 04:04:42 PM
I have a couple of pics of the things I sent thedish! (I hope you're feeling better partner! <3)

She wanted things on the useful side which took me a second to figure out as I tend to be a mostly decorative sort of girl.

Luckily there was a hoopla wall! So I stitched up a pair of hoops.

The hoops are on top of a shawl/scarf/shoulder wrap that I made. Yarn and I have some issues. But my DH made the joke one night when I was stitching on the hoop "Winter is Coming....Bundle Up". It made me laugh and I couldn't resist making some sort of bundly item. My camera ate the other picture I took of it. It really is time to buy a new camera.

And lastly...

Dragon Eye Box. Before this piece I had really only played around with clay and tried to make little food things. I'm rather proud of how it came out.
