8  SEWING IN GENERAL / Sewing in General: Discussion and Questions / Re: Being Cheeky @ the WalMart Fabric Counter on: February 03, 2005 01:59:42 AM
well here in australia we don't have Walmarts [ Target and K-Mart yes but no Wallyworld] tho I did get to experience WW when I went to the States in 96. Sounds like not much has changed.
However the reason I'm writing is to tell you about something that's just happened here that gives one faith in the power of the people.
There is a chain of fabric stores here...sort of in the JoAnns line , called Lincraft....used to be one of THE 2 places to go for fabric. Then a few years ago ...2?...3? it was traken over by a guy who had originated the largest chain here of Reject Shops [ name is self explanatory]
To cut a long story short, Lincraft started stocking cheap, non craft related c##p, and all the craft stuff was suddenly prepacked. You had to buy 2.5 metres of elastic even if you only wanted 1/2 a metre...and 6 buttond when you wanted 3.
The reasoning was supposedly that busy people in their lunch hour didn't want to have to queue up behind some quilter having 20 different fabrics cut. On top of that, instead of having your fabric cut and paying at the same counter, they changed it so that you had to line up a second time at the checkouts [ of which there were usually 2 open!!]
well we all voted with our feet!
and it was announced yesterday that the chain is in receivership
...wonder why?Huh?!!!!!!!
9  CRAFTY BUSINESS ADVICE / Get Product and Website Opinions / Re: to all the cat lovers out there.... and everyone else too! on: February 03, 2005 01:08:46 AM
I ran this idea past my furrbabies and they approve of your idea!!
They both seem to have a preference for things that they can batt at / drag around .... eg snaky things like my phone recharger ...so maybe a catnip snake in funky bright material ??
Hip Nip works for me
cheers

10  QUILTING / Quilting: Completed Projects / Re: Stack 'n Slash Quilt on: February 02, 2005 07:54:10 PM
aren't these S & S quilts just the most fun to make?
I started with a cot [crib] sized one in purple and teal and black and then made a queen sized in yellow and cornflower blue and I love them both. A friend of mine has made I don't know how many...but it's her standard solution for any of those " now what the heck can i do with THIS?" fabrics.
We do a slightly simplified version but the basic idea is the same.
