1  FIBER ARTS / Spinning: Discussion and Questions / Re: We have alpacas.. and LOTS of fiber I don't know what to do with :/ on: June 09, 2012 10:04:51 AM
You might try searching for local spinners. I've seen others post (on Ravelry) offering fiber in trade for yarn spun out of a portion of it. That way you'd still get yarn to play with and it wouldn't cost you anything out of pocket either. Smiley
2  CROCHET / Crochet: Discussion and Questions / Re: $20 a skein yarn? on: September 29, 2010 05:28:18 AM
Most definitely. A lot of quality sock yarn has especially high prices. Also hand/custom dyed yarn or handspun yarn usually adds to the price. The fiber the yarn is made of also effects the price. Acrylic is fairly cheap, but from there you go thru courser wool up to very fine merino, bamboo, silk, alpaca (drool - my current fave. it's soooo soft!), llama, cashmere, angora and blends of all of the above.
If you'd like you can take a look at yarn on etsy.com for an idea on some of the variety out there. It is mostly handspun or dyed but the quality of most is fantastic. Gives you a lot more choices than your local big box store could hope for. Smiley

Shan-E-bear I love that dress! Especially the skirt. I can just see it swirling around.

I've completed 2 more, bringing me to 21 I think.
A snowman just knit on the fly.

Absolutely gorgeous!! What yarn did you use?
Blocking will likely help 'point' the feathers a bit. So lovely!

My latest project. I can finally share it as it has been given and happily squealed over by the recipient.  Grin Made up as I went with lots of trial and error.
In the bottom 2 pics, and the bottom left of the 4-pic collage, I hadn't unplied (is this a word? lol) the yarn of his hair. The other 3 in the 4-pic have his hair unplied and brushed. Turned out much nicer and actually looks like hair.

Here he is pre-clothing.

And with his underclothes.

I love Snape ami!! Did you use a pattern? So cute.

No pattern. I couldn't find any for snape. Plenty for Harry out there, but none that fit for Snape. So I just made it up as I went with a lot of trial and error (especially on the pants!). Of course there are always things I'd change after I finished it, but it got a squeal out of my friend, who knew what it was instantly, so I consider it a success Cheesy

I adore your white ruffled shirt! Love the gathered ones and the popeye one as well. Very impressive! I can't sew fanciness like that at all. lol.

The Snape Ami is too cool!  Grin

Thank you! It's being given as a gift today. I am hoping my friend will like it. She's in love with him. hehe. My first attempt at knitting an actual doll...and pants and tiny clothes. All without a pattern. lol. Was fun! Lots of trial and error.
