I also use Kool Aid to dye roving.  $5 is a crazy price for it!  You can sometimes get it for 10 cents a pack here when it goes on sale.

Hi Spiffyhink, we have had mushroom logs for a few years.  These are some of our shiitakes.  We have the best success using dead oak.  We keep them off the ground under a shady tree.  It takes a lot of patience, or maybe more skill than we have to get mushrooms when you want them!  They usually surprise us.  Good luck!  It's not a big investment, you should definitely give it a try.
