Details of swap:

This swap should be a nice easy one after the busy christmas season!

Basically we're making a needle book for our partner. there are infinite variations on how needle books can look, so I'd suggest checking out your partner's wist, tumblr, blog or profile to get an idea of their style.
Here are some examples to get your ideas going:

if you wish to organise with your partner to send other items with the needle book such as candy, a pin cushion, craft supplies, or similar, you are free to do so, but the key thing here is the needle book. other items are for you and your partner to organise between yourselves.

22  needle book swap in New Swap Theme Ideas by penelopewaits on: December 09, 2010 10:32:04 PM

needle books are so useful for sewers and embroiderers. they save us from keeping our pins and needles in the arm of the couch, or pinned to the hems of our skirts for safekeeping.

they're fun and not especially time-consuming to make, and light to post, so i thought that a swap for exchanging needle books might be a fun idea.

they can be made of fabric or felt, or a combination of the two. they can be appliqued, embroidered, patchwork, or pretty much anything else you can think of. the variations are endless!

what do you think?

23  da de los muertos embroidered hoops in Needlework: Completed Projects by penelopewaits on: December 08, 2010 09:04:57 PM
in the recent chocolate swap (organised by the lovely sweety28303), i was partnered with Zombie_Queen. she likes da de los muertos, and wanted some wall art for her home, so i decided to make her some embroidered hoops...

it's almost all backstitch, with a little satin stitch for the hearts of some of the flowers.

i designed the pattern myself, and i'm considering develping it into a pattern. we'll see how that goes...

i had heaps of fun working with these bright colours, and with the floral motifs.

24  Re: November 2010 Birthday Swap Gallery and Discussion in The Swap Gallery by penelopewaits on: December 01, 2010 12:11:07 AM
you guys, i am literally the luckiest birthday girl ever!
today, i received TWO parcels!

the first was from RhymeswOrange, and contained a beautiful handmade card...

and the most amazing fox scarf!

i adore this little guy, and plan to wear him constantly. thank you so much RhymeswOrange <3

the second was from justaddcats, who noted my love of tea and made me this gorgeous applique'd teacup in an embroidery hoop...

she also indulged my penchant for all things vintage, and sent some delicious craft supplies that she picked up at an estate sale (score!)

i adore the sweet card she made for me too - that little birdy is the cutest!

this was such a thoughtful package, justaddcats, thank you!

i have been having a reaaaaalllyyy crappy few days, and this definitely helped to cheer me up and remind me that there are lovely people in the world.
you guys are awesome xoxox

26  Re: my woodland sampler in Needlework: Completed Projects by penelopewaits on: November 04, 2010 05:35:21 PM
I love your design.  Smiley  Cross stitch samplers are one of my favorites, and I'm a real sucker for fall designs too!

Are you planning to make samplers for the other three seasons too?

i have one that's very springish:

i should think about doing summer and winter too! Smiley

27  my woodland sampler in Needlework: Completed Projects by penelopewaits on: November 02, 2010 12:20:24 AM
i designed this project myself, and i kind of love it. i'm so in love with woodland creatures, and i love samplers too, so it's a match made in heaven as far as i'm concerned Smiley

cross stitch ftw! Cheesy

(p.s. i blogged about it here: http://penelopewaits.com/penny/?p=150)

28  Re: WWP Samhain/Halloween Swap Round 23 Gallery in The Swap Gallery by penelopewaits on: October 25, 2010 09:51:22 PM
my parcel arrived!
thank you so much lisette, it is lovely!

here's what was in there:

a handmade book of secrets (one of the items on my wishlist), with pressed autumn leaves in its pages.

(detail of the embroidery on the book)

a little draw-string bag with moon motif. i haven't decided what to use this for yet, but it will be something magical.

some beautifully autumnal yarn, from which i plan to knit a neck-warmer/scarf type thing.

a decorated pebble, with the rune 'algiz' on it, symbolising protection.

i love the colours and textures of my parcel. it was such a lovely treat.
thank you again, lisette, and thanks to the swap organisers and participants this has been a really great experience to share.

29  hovel, sweet hovel in Needlework: Completed Projects by penelopewaits on: September 28, 2010 02:45:58 AM
here's a quick and easy little pattern that you might like to stitch for your home if you're as domestically challenged as me...  Wink

30  teal deer cross stitch pattern in Needlework: Completed Projects by penelopewaits on: May 25, 2010 06:21:48 PM
i designed this pattern a while back, and thought people might like to have a bash at it.

i'm assuming people actually know the basics of cross stitch, but if you are a beginner, the following links are helpful for getting started:
http://www.cross-stitch-centre.co.uk/acatalog/tutorial.html
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/785979/cross_stitch_in_5_minutes/

this pattern is easy for beginners because it only uses one colour and there isn't a lot of stopping and starting. it takes a couple of hours (but this will vary depending on experience and skill level).

i used DMC floss in the colour "991", which i think is a nice rich teal, but there is nothing stopping you from using another teal. you could even leave out the words and make it a brown deer or a pink or a red or a green deer! Smiley

here is the chart:

(obviously the squares are cross stitches and the lines are back stitches.)

i hope you like it! i'd love to see photos if you make it Smiley

p.s. this is my first post here on craftster. please let me know if there is anything i should change!
