I have been looking for an excuse to write letters for a while and now I have one! I used to have pen pals but we all seemed to lose touch. Anyway I'm Michelle, 24 and in Edmonton, Canada. Let's see...I love knitting, sewing, stenciling, and other forms of crafting. I recently got a serger with my boyfriend, who was the one who got me into sewing.
I lived in Germany for a couple years teaching English. I loved being in Europe and travelling. It was so darn easy there.
I'm working as an editor/transcriber for a marketing research company. It's all right, but they recently started this new software program that monitors our every move and times it down to the very second, which I find incredibly disturbing, so I'll probably look around for a new job. I'd like to find a career that melds my love of crafting and writing...perhaps I'll start a crafting magazine someday. I also have a mini business of crafting and making mostly bags.
Hmm, what else? I enjoy music too. Some bands that I've been listening to lately are: Gogol Bordello, The Unicorns, The Diskettes, The New Pornographers, Stereo Total, The Decemberists, Final Fantasy. Some favourite staples include: Morrissey, The Smiths.
Well, I'm looking to meet some people around my age to share crafts and snail mail with. I also love languages, so anyone who wants to teach me something or allow me to practice my German with them, get in touch!
I agree that it's gotten really expensive and a bit like an Old Navy commercial. For those of us who don't have big power tools, there are a lot of projects that I can't do.
I still like ReadyMade though. Even if I can't make all the projects, they have some good ideas to get the ball rolling.
I am, however, intrigued and stoked about your idea, Ann, on starting a magazine. That's something I'd love to learn more about and maybe even *gasp* turn into a potential career! What better of a topic than crafting? Yay! I've been searching for a magazine like ReadyMade but not quite as upscale for some time, so why not DIY? The answer was right under my nose.
Does anyone know any details about this craft fair that is happening on Oct. 15th at the Queen Alex Community hall? I called the number that was given to reserve a table, left a message and no response back. I emailed as well but also no reply. Is it still going on? Are all the tables taken? If anyone has any info please share as I am left in the dark! Thanks!
I want to stencil a skirt of mine; unfortunately the tag washed away and I don't know what the material is made of...it is this old lady skirt with flowers. It's fairly thin and if I had to guess, I would say that it is polyester. The problem is, I did a trial stencil on a similar fabric and it bled all over the place and turned into one great big blob instead of the wiener dog it was supposed to be. It also soaked through quite heavily.
Is it possible that I just used too much paint/water or is it a problem with the fabric? Has anyone ever had any success with this kind of material? Help please!
If you think that Edmonton has no crafty D.I.Y.ers then try Hamburg, Germany! Everyone just buys their stuff at H & M and other cheap, sweat-shop labour using shops. I tried to organize a Stitch n' Bitch here two times and both times only 1 other person showed up! Anyway I am moving back to Edmonton soon and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a Stitch n' Bitch. I read about the one at Remedy but that post was ages ago...is that still going on? And what are the exact details? I guess not much goes on in the summer but it looks like I'll be in the city for another winter (sigh).
Ok, the last knitting circle was a bit of a bust since the agreed upon cafe was closed. Anyway we are having another one this weekend on Saturday, July 2nd at Cafe May on Lappenbergsallee at 15h. So bring your finished projects, current projects or intended ones and hope to see you there!
Ok, 15.00 is fine. So we will be meeting this Saturday (Feb 12) at Messehallen station at 15.00. Look for the not very tall gal with black hair, glasses, a red coat and the name Michelle. And for those who want to meet at the cafe, see the above posts for directions (sorta) to Latte Menthe. Hope to see you there!
Ah math, sch-math. Who needs it anyway? Well almost everyone...Saturday is fine, I'm just worried that the cafes will be a bit busy. Meeting at Messehalle is ok too. Name me a new time and I will see you there next Saturday (so not the one coming up since I won't be in HH!)
And post away on any other board! The more the merrier!
