11  PURSES, BAGS, WALLETS / Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General / 40s-inspired Avocado Handbag on: August 29, 2006 01:55:03 AM
I made this purse for my friend's birthday. The exterior is a vintage avocado green satin and the interior is a vintage-inspired cotton print. I am SO pleased with the way it turned out that I just had to share:

The exterior:

Side view:

Interior (I used a magnetic snap instead of velcro and added a small pocket to the lining):

Coordinating monogrammed coin purse:

I used Amy Butler's Madison Downtown Purse pattern. It was really straightforward and easy to follow (and that is saying a lot because I really dislike following patterns!). I substituted Timtex and sew-in interfacing for the fusible heavyweight interfacing - it was a bit of work (because it is so rigid, the Timtex is a bitch to maneuver on the sewing machine - this was especially true when I did the topstitching), but I think the finished product was well worth the extra effort!

The zippered pouch was made using the leftovers. It is lined in the same fabric as the handbag. Want to feel like an applique-master? Take a look at SeaofStars' fantastic machine applique tutorial!! That's how I learned. Smiley

I know that not everyone is in love with Amy Butler, but I am so impressed with how clear the instructions were to follow that I would recommend this pattern to anyone! Will definitely be making more of these bags! Thanks for looking!
12  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Baby/Kid Stuff Swap - Any takers for Round 4? on: August 28, 2006 10:42:54 AM
Any takers for another round of the Baby/Kid Stuff swap?

Here are the galleries from previous rounds, which were a lot of fun:

Round 2

Round 3

I'm thinking, early September for sign-ups with the send out in mid-October.

We could do a theme this time (i.e. halloween, fall/winter holidays, etc), if anyone is interested...or not. Smiley What do you think?

14  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Baby/Kid Stuff Swap Round 3 - SIGN UPS CLOSED; SEND OUT BY MAY 29/06 on: April 10, 2006 11:59:05 PM
Swap name: Baby/Kid Stuff Swap (Round 3)
Craftster member who is organizing this swap: Madmatigan79
Sign-up date range: April 11/06 - April 25/06
Date to send item by: May 16/06
Limited to a certain number of people? (optional): No
Non-U.S. participants allowed? Yes
All ages allowed? Or 18+? Come one, come all!

Organizer is aware of current list of "suspended traders" list and will not allow those members to participate: YES

Organizer meets the 4 conditions for swapping and will make sure that every participant meets these conditions: YES

Details of swap:

Because there are more than a few crafty parents/grandparents/aunties/etc out there, this is a swap of items for the "little people" (read: children 12 years and younger) in our lives. Each person will craft at least three medium (time-wise) items (or equivalent, i.e. one large & one small, several small, etc) for their partner's child (or children). If you want to do more (or less), that is fine, as long as you have agreed upon it with your partner.

Consider the interests and age(s) of your partner's child(ren) and make things that will be appropriate.

The Rules:

You've probably heard them all before but here goes...

If you are eligible to get a DC (delivery confirmation number), you MUST get a DC. If you are not eligible to get a DC, SAVE YOUR RECEIPT AS PROOF THAT YOU HAVE SENT!

Please acknowledge when you receive your package by sending a pm to both me and your partner AND by posting in the Swap Gallery (will post link to thread once swap is underway).

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO POST IN THIS THREAD OR ACTIVATE THE 'NEW POST' NOTIFICATION FEATURE. This will ensure that no one gets left out of the loop as you will know when I or anyone else leaves a new message on this thread.

PLEASE DON'T SEND OUT EARLY without checking with me first! I will send out a pm to check in with everybody prior to the mail out date. When people reply to the check in pm, I will post a list on this thread. When your partner has replied, you may go ahead and send their package. Your partner will not send their package until I have heard from you! (this method seems to have worked for other organizers in keeping things on track and weeding out flakers)

If, for whatever reason, you are going to have to send late (or worse, not send at all - we all understand that life can get in the way of crafting), please let me and your partner know ASAP. Avoid negative feedback by keeping in good communication!!

If you want to participate, information to send to organizer:

17  CITY GUIDES FOR CRAFTSTERS / CANADA / Attention thrift store junkies...! on: February 05, 2006 07:28:18 PM
Hello fellow craftsters!

Just thought I would mention that on February 20th, Value Village is having a 50% off everything (used) sale.

Good opportunity to stock up on vintage materials/things to reconstruct/etc.

18  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / Talk About The Swap Process / Meeting the 4 Conditions of Swapping... on: January 13, 2006 01:21:06 PM
Hi everyone,

I am sure that this has been covered many times before, but I haven't had personal experience with it...so here we go again and I apologize if I'm being redundant...

I am organizing a swap for the first time and have had a couple of pms from people who do not yet meet the current requirements to swap. I have accepted one of them, as she will pass her 'one-month' milestone before sign-ups end...I had no problem with this and was flattered that she picked MY swap to be her first (lame...I know! But I'm excited!).

The other member, I am REALLY hesitant to accept (even if she does meet the criteria in time). She pmed her info to me this morning and, even though she had only one swap under her belt and that was listed as 'in progress', she stated that her feedback should be updated in time for her to participate in my swap. I know that some people will accept a person, even if they don't have the feedback for their first swap, as long as their partner has posted publicly that they've received. The thing is - the sign-ups for her first swap just ended and mail-out isn't until the end of the month - there isn't even a gallery up yet!

So...I just have to pm her back and let her know that she can't participate until she meets the requirements...no problem, right? Well...when I check her profile this afternoon, I see that she now has THREE more swaps listed as 'in progress' (so 4 total), even though she hasn't yet completed the mandatory first swap.

Does anyone else think that this seems a little fishy? And why did other organizers allow her to join their swaps if she hasn't met the mandatory requirements? I just hope that she turns out to be an honest swapper and not someone who signs up to get a bunch of 'free' stuff and then disappears.

20  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Baby/Kid stuff swap (round 2)? on: December 18, 2005 11:38:07 PM
Since there are more than a few crafty parents/grandparents/aunties/etc out there, would anyone be interested in swapping items for the "little people" in your lives?

The first round of this swap seemed to be a success and it is always fun to craft 'kid stuff'!

If there is enough interest in a second round, maybe we could start sign ups for some time in the new year (late January perhaps, once things are back to normal after the holiday season)?
