11  40s-inspired Avocado Handbag in Purses, Bags, Wallets: Completed Projects: General by Madmatigan79 on: August 29, 2006 01:55:03 AM
I made this purse for my friend's birthday. The exterior is a vintage avocado green satin and the interior is a vintage-inspired cotton print. I am SO pleased with the way it turned out that I just had to share:

The exterior:

Side view:

Interior (I used a magnetic snap instead of velcro and added a small pocket to the lining):

Coordinating monogrammed coin purse:

I used Amy Butler's Madison Downtown Purse pattern. It was really straightforward and easy to follow (and that is saying a lot because I really dislike following patterns!). I substituted Timtex and sew-in interfacing for the fusible heavyweight interfacing - it was a bit of work (because it is so rigid, the Timtex is a bitch to maneuver on the sewing machine - this was especially true when I did the topstitching), but I think the finished product was well worth the extra effort!

The zippered pouch was made using the leftovers. It is lined in the same fabric as the handbag. Want to feel like an applique-master? Take a look at SeaofStars' fantastic machine applique tutorial!! That's how I learned. Smiley

I know that not everyone is in love with Amy Butler, but I am so impressed with how clear the instructions were to follow that I would recommend this pattern to anyone! Will definitely be making more of these bags! Thanks for looking!

I'm glad you liked them, lechaton!

You can kind of see the needles in this picture:

Thanks again, kitty1256 for organizing!

I received my package from lechaton today!

An adorable crocheted panta in bright blue & brown with a button closure (it will coordinate wonderfully with my winter wardrobe!) and the sweetest little earrings.

Here are some pics of the loot:

The earrings & panta (& my daughter's little hands darting in to steal my goodies!):

And the kid & I modelling the lovely panta (sorry if the greasy sunburned face gives anybody nightmares  Wink ):

Thanks so much, lechaton! I love this package!

Here is a close up of the applique:

I used the tutorial by the wonderful seaofstars!

I am so happy that you liked everything, Kaesea! I was so excited about the way everything came together!

The yarn is from an alpaca farm just outside of my city. Smiley And yes...it is sooooooooooo soft...and yes...it was hard to part with! Wink

Hooray! My camera has decided to work again!

Here is the painting I received from boywonder:

To show you just HOW perfect it is, here it is beside the "mod kitty" fabric I purchased last month!

Thanks again, boywonder! You are very talented!  Smiley

Since it doesn't look like my partner is going to post and "out" me (where did you go, my little FOC friend?) - here is the reveal package that I sent to PSYCHE:

Here is the loot - I went with a "sinful" theme: "Wash Away Your Sins" soap, a journal that I re-covered that says "Jessica's Naughty Secrets" and a package of iron-on gold letters (how can something SO bad be SO good?!).

A detail of the journal's cover (I used my sewing machine to do the embroidery because I am hand-embroidery-ly-challenged!):

This is the paper I used for the inside covers...it had a sort of "antique-y" feel:

Sorry if this seems like a "validate me please! I'm an attention whore!" post, but I put a LOT of time and effort into the things I sent my partner and just wanted to show them off. Smiley

The other packages I sent were:

1st send out (small crafted):
black vinyl wristlet with light blue flames applique
t-shirt with iron-on transfer from Mister Ruesch (sp?)
black & fuschia hand-dyed plexiglas necklace

2nd send out (large crafted):
knit/fulled black leg warmers with ribbon lacing
recon'd t-shirt/halter top

3rd send out (surprise):
book: "The Starving Artists Way"
dress-up Rock-star paper doll/sticker thingy

I hope she liked everything!

So I know that this swap is long over...but I received from my wonderful swap angel, lafemmefatale, the other day! She went above and beyond, sending not one, but TWO t-shirts, some cute pink & brown buttons (can't wait to make something with these!), and an appliqued a-line skirt! Wow! I only have one picture downloaded right now, but will get everything else up on the weekend - this girl deserves a lot of credit (AND this was her first swap!).

Here are the skirt and one of the tops (stencilled) "in action" (don't mind my pasty white legs and my sunburned face...this was taken on the first "summery" day we had):

Thank you so much, lafemmefatale! You did a fantastic job and I love everything (more pics to come!). Smiley

My husband received his terrific package from kidcompassion yesterday. It arrived just as he was about to leave for work, so it was a pleasant surprise!

Here he is with our daughter helping him open the package:

And the goods:

A stencilled t-shirt with the numbers from LOST (a favorite) and a knit skull cap with a shrinky dink Habs logo (dh's favorite team) - don't mind the "Chandler Bing smile":

A vinyl case to fit his mp3 player (it fits perfectly!):

A framed photo of Mark Burnett (an inside joke between dh & I! Perfect!) that has found a place on the shelf that holds our family/wedding/etc photos!

And everything else - on top of the great goodies above, kidcompassion also sent a zippered vinyl pouch for the boy's crochet hooks, etc with a pattern & the materials to make a beanie for our daughter as well as some movie posters (husband is a movie nut - he was especially excited about the Sin City poster, as you can see!):

This was a really fun swap! What a generous package, kidcompassion! Thanks so much!
