Those skirts are super cute, so is the model!
2  CLOTHING / Clothing for Kids: Completed Projects / Tulle Time! on: September 14, 2011 07:13:20 PM
I'm always on here looking at what people make and getting ideas of things to try while I teach myself to sew. My daughter saw this skirt, http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=298574.0  and told me she had to have one, so I made one.

I am happy with it and so is my daughter but I thought it would look cute a bit shorter and fuller so I did both layers from the original tute, left out the ruffle hem, and used a ribbon sewn to a piece of elastic in the waistband.

I LOVE how this one came out, and while I doubt I'll be going anywhere near tulle again for quite awhile, I think I could do even better if I ever made one again.
3  CLOTHING / Costumes: Discussion and Questions / Re: Any advice before I completely destroy my costume? on: October 28, 2010 09:26:42 AM
I actually thought about doing that but my experience with grommets has been disasterous. I did end up adding some matching fabric where needed and putting in a zipper but when I put it on and bent over the side seams split. Now I have to figure out how to fix that.
The zipper was my best one ever though!

I bought a costume for my Latin Halloween party on Saturday assuming from the measurements on the package that it would fit. Wrong. The main piece is a dress that does up in the back with 5 velcro closures. The top 3 come together with room to spare, the 4th one closes perfect and the bottom one doesn't even come close.
I put it on inside out and had my hubby take some measurements for me. At the bottom closure I need 4" for it to fit, tapering up to the next bit of velcro which is roughly 6" above.
Ideally I'd like to take out the velcro and add a zipper but I don't know how to add fabric so the bottom closes. I also marked where the top bits need to be taken in which I can do easily after the zip is in.
Any suggestions?

Ooh that dress is smokin'! And I think the strappy shoe looks awesome with it.

There's a girl on youtube, GiannyL, who shows how to make a couple different styles. It may give you a starting point?

Super awesome! I love the waist and trim.

Ludi - I actually have no idea what muslin is, maybe I should find out Huh I do have a bunch of old sheets but the fabric I have for the eventual dress is completely different. How will I know the fit and lines will be right?

My first goal is to not bugger up my machine every time I sew! Really though here are my goals:

Learn proper seam finishes
Make my daughters Christmas dress ( I have all the fabric I'm just terrified to actually start cutting it)
Figure out how to sew/hem neck and armholes
Shirring- bane of my existence but something I'm determined to master.

Really my ultimate goal is to sew without fear! I've only been sewing for a few months and I'm teaching myself but there are so many things I just don't grasp.
