21  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / New Swap Theme Ideas / Re: Ongoing Teesha Moore Patch Swap Round 1-3 Discussion Thread (Swap Related Only) on: March 24, 2013 07:34:44 AM
This was a lot of fun...maybe people are ready to get back to it?  The patches do make for nice portable projects.
22  JEWELRY AND TRINKETS / Beads: Completed Projects / beaded kumihimo bracelet on: March 23, 2013 07:44:15 PM

I made this bracelet recently with a new craft I learned from a friend at work - Japanese kumihimo braiding with beads.  It looks very intricate but is much easier than it appears!

These are lovely - I love the warm, rich colors you chose!

25  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: Prayer Flag Swap Rd. 2 GALLERY! on: February 02, 2013 06:07:35 PM
The post office says it was delivered and I know sparks has been preoccupied with other things going on in her life so I thought I would just post a pic of the flag I sent to her.  Her words were serenity, tranquility & peace; favorite images included ocean, waves, sea turtles; favorite colors, aqua and red.  It's not exactly a sea turtle, but the colors and feeling seemed right.  I do hope she likes it.

While looking through the camera files for a photo to post I also came across a pic of caterpillars in my yard - just to show you how close to the mark her caterpillar was with its spiky orange hairs...

26  ORGANIZED CRAFT SWAPS / The Swap Gallery / Re: Prayer Flag Swap Rd. 2 GALLERY! on: January 26, 2013 11:53:51 AM
Like Mary Colleen, I had sparks for a partner and we got lucky!  She was delayed sending (it happens to all of us, really, one time or another) and she sent us each an extra flag to make up for the delay (totally not necessary, but absolutely appreciated!).

First, a picture of my two flags together...

And, the details -
the flag on the left is hard to describe and hard to photograph suitably, but it's wonderful, inspired perhaps by some moth photos on my blog and my love of nature.  The flag itself is vertical strips of varied depths and textures (I can't even quite see how she did it, to be honest  Huh) that resemble the bark of a tree.  The bark is overlaid with a green leaf with a wonderful wooly brown caterpillar with spiky orange hairs, as some caterpillars do have - you can even see a couple of holes in the leaf where the hungry thing has been munching!  The photograph picks up a lot of detail in the fabric strips, which the eye sort of blurs.  When you look at the flag in person it really has an uncanny resemblance to tree bark.

The second flag is a lovely tribute to the beauty and serenity of a sunny day on the ocean, which makes me look forward to the summer more than ever...

Thanks so much, sparks, I love them both and I'm so glad I didn't have to choose because I'm not sure I could have very easily.  Sorry for the delay in posting photos - the last week's been a bit hectic with power/internet outages and fractious furnaces.

I received my flag yesterday from MaryColleen... not only do I absolutely love it, but it's like she and I were reading each other's minds!  Cheesy

She picked up on my ideas of seashore, islands, lighthouses, and my theme of compassion and made me this beauty (if you look closely I think you can see the sparkly bits where the lighthouse beam is flashing)

and the backing is a beautiful warm sandy brown

The funny thing is that I think we were both a bit uneasy about how the other one would feel about the simpler style flag...but we both did it!  On the footsteps flag I made for MaryColleen, I wanted so much to embellish the frothy wave bits with embroidery threads or beads or something but I was really worried that it would ruin the whole "simple things in life" part of it so I didn't.  We also both used computer printing on fabric for the first time - I was really pleased with how it worked out.  I just ironed the fabric to freezer paper, then fed it through the printer. Presto!  MaryColleen did some painting on hers as well, which really added a nice depth to the image.

I have to say that I am just amazed every time I look at a new flag on this thread - what a wonderful collection this is!
28  Craft Swaps / ARCHIVE OF SWAPS THAT ARE TOTALLY FINISHED / Re: Prayer Flag Swap Rd. 2; sign ups CLOSED, send by Jan 11, 2013 on: January 11, 2013 04:44:59 PM
Very sad news from flyraeven!

One hopes that the package from Hawaii via New Jersey was headed to Washington, DC, not Washington state  Tongue

My flags to sparks and MaryColleen are in the mail!

I'm happily crafting away.  New techniques are working and so far I've even been able to find all the bits I wanted from my stash! Probably won't mail till the end of the week.  Best wishes for the coming year to all!!

Tidying up loose ends for 2012...
This is a hoopla I made for jo_mama in the Ongoing Wish Swap Round 80.  Design was from an Urban Threads pattern.
