SO here's the deal...
The science museum I work at likes to corroborate our hands-on activities with each new IMAX movie we get. Our newest IMAX film is called "Greece: Secrets of the Past" and focuses on the ancient Minoan city of Akrotiri. (Akrotiri was discovered in 1968 on the island of Santorini buried under a thick layer of volcanic ash. Basically, Akrotiri is the greek version of Pompeii.)
But anyways, so we decided that a cool hands-on activity to go with our new movie would be a mock archeological dig! I spent 4 days working non-stop on this thing to get it done by this weekend, but I think it came out great! It was totally worth it!
The last step of this project was to fill the whole thing with sand so that the kids could dig it out. IT took well over 300lbs of sand to fill the silly thing.
Here's an overview of the whole thing. It's 6 feet by 8 feet. The walls are made of this purple foam board stuff that I hot glued together and painted with acrylics.
A different angle of the whole thing. The columns are old building blocks that I painted and hot glued in place.
Yet another angle. The 'frescoes' on the walls are images I printed out from the internet and mod-podged on the walls.

This is a close up of the 'Forum' which would have been a public gathering space where people came together to discuss politics and stuff.
