I have a suggestion for the shutter. If it is still in good-working order, you could decoupage cover art or text from books on either side of the blades. This would effectively make a sign that can flip.

This may be a stupid suggestion, but I would almost like to the see the backs on the seats beaded - like those beaded seat cushions that you see in taxi cabs.
