have you tried using a ball point needle? sometimes that helps with puckering, although I havent sewn on paper too much, but when I have it seems to really work.
No, Ive actually been meaning to pick up some, I actually am just starting to try doing some 'proper' sewing (AKA actually using the right settings/feet/tensions and needles) Tongue up to this point Ive just been winging it and hoping for the best. 
I guess I finally decided to learn a thing or two! hehe.

shan-E-bear: I didnt notice any problems working with vinyl, I just used the thinnest stuff I could get, but it seemed to sew alright (except either my needle was getting dull at that point anyway, or it dulled it quicker than normal cause it seemed by the end of things it was being a little moody) I wonder how it would work with thicker vinyl but I have yet to try it..

The biggest problem was sewing everything face-up so when the needle would thread through the paper it wouldnt cause it to pucker out, but I felt a bit like I was sewing blind trying to hem things and not seeing what I was working on ^^;.

I think alot of people are going to hope for a farting hippo Tongue I totally couldnt make one but am tempted to try it sometime on my own (I wouldnt want to make a crappy gift for anyone.. hippo with half a face or something hahaha!)
