21  Our Lady of Guadalupe Cross Stitch with link to free chart in Needlework: Completed Projects by Maria Merlino on: May 04, 2013 08:06:41 AM

I've always wanted to embroider Our Lady of Guadalupe but didn't want a big chart as I don't have that much time to devote to a single project. Here is the icon charted to a 4x6 inch size on 14 ct. aida. There are only 12 colors of floss used , so you won't go nuts gathering your supplies.

If you would like to make one for yourself or a gift, here is the link:

22  Human Heart Cross Stitch with free chart in Needlework: Completed Projects by Maria Merlino on: April 28, 2013 02:13:24 PM

Project Runway Seasons 11 winner, Michelle Lesniak Franklin, had a runway piece that judge Nina Garcia so absolutely loved that she begged Michelle to send her one. And what was it that Nina adored? It was a knit sweater with a human heart, bleeding.

OK, this heart isn't bleeding, but it is a human heart. Easily worked on 14 ct. aida.

With all the 420 celebrations around the country, I thought it would be fun to make a little cross stitch sampler to commemorate the event.
I used 14 ct. aida. It fits into a 5x7 inch frame.

If you want to make your own, here is the link:

25  Irish Crochet Rose with Off-Set Petals--->Free Pattern link in Crochet: Completed Projects by Maria Merlino on: April 08, 2013 01:11:14 PM

Here is a motif that uses the Irish crochet technique. Rose petal rounds are off-set in the next petal round. This gives the inner petals a beautiful frame of outer petals. Use this rose to jazz up a hat. It uses less than 1/2 ounce of yarn, so it makes a good scrap project.

The pattern is here:

26  Pentagonal Granny Stitch Square Motif Hat---free pattern link in Crochet: Completed Projects by Maria Merlino on: April 08, 2013 01:04:51 PM

Here is a granny stitch motif hat that begins a bit differently, with a five cornered center instead of a four cornered center. By using a pentagon instead of a square, a hat can be shaped in a more human-like rounded manner. Size variances can be achieved by using a smaller or larger hook or by adding additional rows and rounds—for width, work another round of corners, for length, add more rows before working the border. Since this hat uses less than two ounces of yarn, it’s perfect for using up scraps.

27  Crochet Skip One Two Baby Blanket ---> Fre pattern link in Crochet: Completed Projects by Maria Merlino on: March 27, 2013 06:06:52 AM

Close Up of Stitch

Close Up of Border

Made entirely of single crochet stitches, but placed in a way that the fabric made is soft, but not hole-y. I also used a K/6.5mm hook so that the the stitches would be more springy. Size is 24x32 inches.

29  Crochet pineapple stitch warm weather summer sexy beach hat ---> pattern link in Crochet: Completed Projects by Maria Merlino on: March 16, 2013 12:40:03 PM

One of the prettiest stitches in crochet is the pineapple. In this project, it is worked in the round. Here is a lacy hat, suitable for warm weather, which is crocheted in 4 ply cotton. There are plenty of open spaces and four big beautiful pineapples to show off. Can be made in less than two hours and uses less than one skein of thick cotton.

Materials: 1 skein of as Lily Sugar nCream4-ply cotton yarn, either the 2 ounce variegated or the 2.5 ounce solid color. You will need 1.4 ounces in color of choice. Models were made with colors Key Lime Pie and Red.

30  I Netted a Heart Shawl ----> free pattern link in Crochet: Completed Projects by Maria Merlino on: February 21, 2013 05:39:39 AM

Detail of heart

When I saw Babukatorium's post about the beautiful heart shawl she made from a vintage pattern, it jogged my memory. The vintage pattern she used was from a French magazine that is in my personal collection.. The directions were very sketchy, not written in modern terminology and assumed that the person making it was skilled. I completely re-wrote the directions in row by row detail and added an 18 photo slide show help.  I also added a border to the top of the shawl to finish it off nicely. There was no name for the stitch used, so I'm calling it Netted Heart Stitch.
