There are indoor kits for growing the button mushrooms like those sold in the supermarket - both white and tan are available. It was basically the size of a box of copy paper, filled with straw-type material. The spores come in a bag of something compost-like that you spread over the straw and water thoroughly. Then just keep it damp and dark, and enjoy the mushrooms. I believe the kit is around $20. We order from Jung Seed Co's catalog.
I have also grown some gourmet mushrooms: one that looked like a head of cauliflower, but tasted like lobster! Very fun, interesting "gardening"
and so delicious. It was several years ago, so no pics to post - sorry.
