Many thanks again for your kind comments! I had actually set out to make a diaper wreath, but decided to go all out and go for the cake. I have had four people tell me AI should make these and sell them- but I'd rather just tell everyone how to do it- besides, when it's for someone you love, you put way more attention into the little details. If I had to make them for a living, I think I'd get burnt out.

 Thanks for the nice comments! I couldn't believe the prices people wanted to make these- soo much cheaper to do it yourself. Google "diaper cakes" and see for yourselves.

It took me about two hours to roll the diapers, get them into position, and then tie each tier together. The decorating too about an hour- because it was my very first one, and it's for my daughter...I have three MORE daughters, so I'd better get good at this!

I merely stacked the tiers atop one another; I wanted to make sure all of the diaper cake was useable, so no pins, glue or tape. It's hard to see, but over the two rows of pastel ribbon on each tier is a two inch wide piece of pink dotted swiss ribbon. It really is pretty.

All in all, 240 newborn (swaddlers) diapers were used., and it stands about three feet high. All the trinkets are simply tucked into the ribbons, and the carnations are simply poked into the rolls of the diapers. I am going to tell my DD to save the carnations for her wedding. Total cost: $ 35 bucks. The case of diapers was the
most expensive item- thank Goodness for eBay!

So, I'm to be a Grammy for the very first time --- in less than a month...oh my!

Anyhoo- Just constructed my very first diaper cake out of Pampers Swaddlers, fake carnations and various assorted ribbons and baby toys. It was MUCH easier than I thought it would be. You basically roll your diapers tight, secure with clear elastic (like those used for cornrows), then tie your circles of diapers together with ribbon. Stack the circles atop one another and decorate your little heart out.
Going to use this as the centerpiece for my DD's shower next week-end.




Also, thought I'd use some AOHELL cd's to make a mobile kind of thingy to hang up at the shower. In case you can't see it too well, the baby's name is Faith, and these were just decorated with little scrapbooking items and some labels I printed on the computer. Please let me know what you think!

okay..any suggestions on how to adjust this to be a laptop bag? like, make it much sturdier (maybe boning around the "frame"??!), with a padded section in the middle, maybe?

I've been toying around with the plastic type stuff that bacon comes packaged with- it's sturdy yet flexible, and not at all bulky- I'd bet there's a way to use it with padding or batting under the fabric layers to make your laptop bag!
