41  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Puffy Cloud and Hearts Mobile Tutorial on: February 06, 2014 02:42:32 PM
I originally made this as a nursery decoration, but realized how great it would be as a photography prop, too!  So simple to create.

Supplies
Paper (I reused scraps of wrapping paper)
Pencil
Scissors
Felt in two colors (I used white and red, obviously)
Pins
Thread
Polyfill
Twine, yarn or ribbon for hanging

Steps

Create your happy cloud pattern.  Just doodle it out in a random, happy fashion.  It helps, if you also use a happy pencil.  Mine has cartoon popsicles on it.

Cut out the cloud pattern.

Pin the pattern to the felt.

Cut out the felt cloud x 2 (one for front and one for back).

Pin the two sides of the cloud together (right sides out, as you will not be inverting this piece like a traditional pillow).

Sew.  Sew.  Sew.

As you get near the end, stop and stuff the cloud with polyfill.  Finish sewing it.

Hearts!

Same concept as the cloud.  Create a pattern.  Pin it to the felt.

Cut out the felt hearts.  Repeat as many times as your little heart desires. Wink

Sew 'em together!  Insert the ribbon, yarn or twine and sew right over it.

Don't forget to stop and stuff them with polyfill before you finish sewing the perimeter.

Attach the heart/raindrop strands to your cloud however you'd like.  A simple stitch would do the trick.  I just safety pinned mine to the back, so I can change the arrangement and length for photos.  baby.sweets4ever has also requested a variety of different drops (blue & green drops, stars, etc.), so I'll be able to easily mix it up!  How cute would this be with those really big plastic teardrop "gemstones"?  I bet it would make beautiful rainbow prisms all over the room! Smiley

Enjoy! Smiley

This month, we're putting a pretty major (awesome!) twist on the Craft Challenge again!  This challenge was hugely popular last year, so we're bringing it back again! Smiley

This month, you don't actually have to craft anything right now!  For this craft challenge, we want to encourage you to share a project that you've never posted a thread for previously.  The crafty kicker -- it has to be a project that you've sent in a Craftster Craft Swap.  Over time, so many amazing projects get buried in the Swap Galleries.  Let's expose them!! Smiley

Your project can be any medium, technique, size or shape you desire, as long as you sent it for an organized Craftster Craft Swap! Smiley  The project must not already have its own Completed Project thread.  It's totally okay if it was already shared within a Swap Gallery, though!

When the challenge is complete, we'll tag and move all of the projects to their proper category boards. Smiley

For this unique challenge, the requirements are bit more specific than usual, so be sure to read them very carefully:
  • Post your project on the entry board from (Mar 3 - 10, 2014) only.  Your project must be something you crafted and sent for an organized Craftster Craft Swap.  It cannot be something made for a personal swap or swap on another site.  It can be a project you sent as an angel package for a Craftster Craft Swap, though. Smiley
  • In your entry thread, share the title and link to the swap for which you crafted the project.  Feel free to give a little shout out to your partner in your thread, too! Smiley
  • Share at least one photo of your project, but more are always encouraged.  If you are entering your project with photos your recipient captured, please privately contact and ask for their permission to use their photos.

Additional Rules and Details:

  • On March 3, 2014, there will be a special folder created for entries.  Post your entry on the specified entry board during the period of March 3 - March 10 11:59:59 PDT 2014.  No sooner.  No later.
  • Voting will happen from March 11 - March 18 2014.
  • The winner will be officially announced on the first business Monday of the next month -- in our April newsletter, on this thread and on the Craftster blog.  We will contact you via Private Message, after the announcement, to get your prize package information.
  • Enter only ONE project.  Your entry can have multiple components to it.
  • If cheating of any sort is discovered, the applicable entry and votes will be disqualified.

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original, has never been posted on Craftster, or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, please give credit to that project. Smiley

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first place winner (US or non-US) will get:

(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the Craftster Blog
(3) and a prize from us at Craftster.org -- any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

44  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Latest News / 01/31/14 - Craftster Best of 2013 announced! on: January 31, 2014 04:55:18 PM

Many, many thanks to everyone that shared amazing projects, advice and inspiration on Craftster in 2013.  As always, it was such a great year for our community, and we're so happy each of you shared a part in it!

Of course, choosing the "Best Of" is a fun, but very difficult task for us.  After all, all of the projects posted on Craftster are the best to us!  This is just a small sampling of what makes our community such a tremendous place to call home.  We all deserve major kudos for everything we've contributed to Craftster in the last year! Smiley

Once again, thank you! Kiss  And congrats to our Best of 2013!

45  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Fruit Salad Pirate Ship on: January 20, 2014 08:33:07 PM
Seriously having too much fun with preschool snack days.  I can't stop! Cheesy  Here's snack for tomorrow.

Pretty self-explanatory, I think.  I was super close to cooking and braiding spaghetti for mast roping, but controlled myself. Cheesy

I might need to make another for Talk Like a Pirate Day, haha!

46  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Family Birthday Calendar Tutorial on: January 17, 2014 09:00:08 PM

I made this for my mother-in-law for Christmas.  She had mentioned she saw one and loved it, and so it was born. Smiley

Supplies
Wooden plaque
Wooden nickels
Acrylic paint in two colors
Brush and spouncer sponge
Stencils
Letter stickers
Ceiling hooks
Open S hooks
Ribbon for hanging
Staple gun and staples
Permanent marker

Steps

Gather your supplies.

Apply two coats of paint to the wooden nickels and wooden plaque.

Center align and tape your FAMILY stencil to prepare for painting.

Using the spouncer, apply paint throughout your stencil.

On the bottom edge of the wooden plaque, measure and mark positions for ceiling hooks -- one for each month of the year.  Attach hooks.

Using ninja precision, align the itty bitty stickers above their corresponding hooks to mark the months.  I may or may not have used tweezers for this step.

Flip the wooden plaque over and, using your staple gun, attach the ribbon for hanging.  Tie the ribbon in a pretty little bow.

Drill holes in the wooden nickels.  I stacked 5 of them together, held them with a clamp and drilled them in batches to save some time.

Using the permanent marker, doodle the name and birth day of a family member on a wooden nickel.  One nickel per person.

Hang all of the birthdays on the calendar and bask in the awesomeness you've created. Smiley

Happy New Year!  This month, we have a very special challenge in store for you!  Instructables, an amazing site for sharing what you make, has provided a humongous prize package!  Not only will the first place winner get a prize this month, but nine other entries will as well! Shocked

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is New Year, New Uses!  Your challenge this month is to bring new life to an old object in your home.  The object could be a houseware piece, an item of clothing, home decor... anything you choose!  Your repurposing should transform the object into something entirely new and unexpected.  Perhaps you'll finally get to make a lamp out of that vintage, avocado green blender you've been hoarding all these years. Wink

Of course you can use other materials and supplies, new and old, to transform your item.  Your old item should be the star material of the show, though.

In your entry, submit at least two photos:  one before photo and one after photo.  Additional photos are encouraged, too! Smiley

Additional Rules and Details:

  • Craft your project during this challenge period (Jan 8 - Feb 10 2014) only.  Projects created before this timeframe will be excluded from the voting poll.
  • On Feb 3 2014, there will be a special folder created for entries.  Post your entry on the specified entry board during the period of Feb 3 to Feb 10 11:59:59 PDT 2014.  No sooner.  No later.
  • Voting will happen from Feb 11 - 18, 2014.
  • The winner will be officially announced on the first business Monday of the next month -- in our March newsletter, on this thread and on the Craftster blog.

Smiley

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first AND second place winner (US or non-US) will get:

(1) an Instructables t-shirt and a copy of How to do Absolutely Everything
(2) their project in the Featured Projects area
(3) their project in the Craftster Blog
(4) and a prize from us at Craftster.org -- any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

EIGHT additional winners will also get an Instructables t-shirt!
