October is here and we're ready to see all of the crafty costumes!  Time to showcase all of those amazingly creative DIY Halloween costumes of this season.  Each year, we've had the pleasure of viewing absolutely spectacular handcrafted costumes.  And now we want to see yours!

We're very excited to announce that Susan Beal is sponsoring our Costume Contest this year with a copy of her book, Sewing for all Seasons, 24 Stylish Projects to Stitch Throughout the Year!  Susan Beal is a craft expert, author, and the founder of West Coast Crafty. She writes for craft magazines and websites and was included in the acclaimed film Handmade Nation. She is the author of World of Geekcraft and lives in Portland, Oregon.  The first place winner will get an amazing prize package, including a copy of her book, Sewing for all Seasons!

Here are a few specifics for this challenge:
  • The costume you enter must have some handmade components.
  • It must be a costume you are making for this year (Halloween 2013), and not photos of a costume from past years.
  • If you are making a costume for someone else, and not for yourself to wear, it's okay enter it, but just remember that you can only have one entry in this contest.
  • If you are making a set of costumes for multiple people that all go together via a common theme, you can enter them together as one entry.

Rules:

  • Enter costumes crafted for Halloween 2013 only.  Projects created before this timeframe will not be removed from the entry board, but they will be excluded from the voting poll.
  • Each participant can enter ONE project (Although your entry can have multiple components to it).
  • Post your craft during the period of Nov 1 - Nov 10 2013. No sooner.  No later.  On Nov 1, there will be a special folder created for entries.
  • Voting will happen from Nov 11 - Nov 18 2013.
  • The winner will be officially announced on our first business Monday of the next month -- in our December newsletter, on this thread and on the Craftster blog.  We will contact you via Private Message, after the announcement, to get your prize package information.
  • If cheating of any sort is discovered, the applicable entry and votes will be disqualified.

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original, has never been posted on Craftster or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, please give credit to that project.

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first place winner will get...

(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the Craftster Blog
(3) a copy of Sewing for all Seasons (winner can receive prize in U.S. or non-U.S.):
From autumns bursts of orange and red to springs lush greens, summers long-lasting golden light and winters cool whites and grays, the changing seasons provide endless artistic inspiration. In Sewing for All Seasons, author Susan Beal offers 24 beautiful projects imbued with the spirit of each season. Home sewists will enjoy stitching a cozy patchwork throw for autumn, a bright gardening apron to welcome spring, a colorful picnic quilt for summer, and soft woolen slippers for those chilly winter nights. With how-to illustrations, helpful templates and patterns, tons of color, and eye-catching photography, this book will leap off shelves and inspire crafters all year long.
(4) and this Craftster prize (winner can receive prize in U.S. or non-U.S.):
Any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

44  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Egg Carton Scavenger Hunt on: September 18, 2013 10:54:12 AM
Egg cartons make perfect collection and storage containers for scavenger hunts!

So simple -- just collect some clipart applicable to your region, print, cut and paste.

I went one step further, since we are teaching reading right now, and added the words below each image.  I used mini brads to attach the clipart images.

It's also very important to stop for hydration along your journey.

Dry your flowers and leaves in books to preserve them.  If you're feeling really feisty, spray your dandelion puff with hairspray to preserve it. Wink  And lastly, take your findings to Show & Share Day at school Grin

45  TOYS, DOLLS AND PLAYTHINGS / Toys, Dolls and Playthings: Completed Projects / Easy Homemade Play Dough! on: September 13, 2013 01:51:07 PM

This version of play dough is so easy and quick to make!  If kept in an air-tight container, it will last four to six months.  And the process is like a science experiment for the kids (and you Cheesy), which is just a fun bonus!

Supplies:
1 cup water
1 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
Coloring of your choice -- I use Betty Crocker Gel Food Colors (Classic)

Steps:

Pour all of the ingredients into a saucepan.

The next set of photos is all one step -- stirring!  Heat on medium high heat and stir stir stir.  It finishes very quickly, so keep stirring and do not walk away.  I timed and, start to finish, it was done in less than six minutes.

0:01 Start stirring!

0:01 Stir stir stir Smiley

0:03 Ooh, it's starting to get thick!  Don't back out now.

0:04 Eep!  There are weird little lumps forming!  Don't be scared.  This is perfect.  Keep stirring.

0:04 Okay, this just looks gross.  Are you sure about this?  Yes.  Keep on stirring.

0:05 Something is definitely happening here.

0:05 Ahh, I get it now.

0:06 Well, would you look at that?  It's play dough!

Now you just slap it out to cool for maybe 10 or so minutes.  I put it on wax paper.

And the best part -- knead it!  Mr.sweets4ever and baby.sweets4ever had entirely too much fun helping with this step.

Voil!  Oodles of dough!

In the past, we've revamped bed sheets, catalogs and even plastic eggs, but now it's time to revamp a pillowcase!  Your challenge this month is to take one (and only one) pillowcase and revamp it into something entirely different!  Don't just decorate a pillowcase -- revamp it entirely.  Transform it into something new and possibly unexpected.

You can use as many other materials and techniques as you desire, but your pillowcase should somehow be the star of the show.  You can use a pillowcase you already have in your home, grab one from a friend or buy a new one.

In your project entry thread, you must include at least two photos -- a before and an after.  Additional photos are more than welcome, too! Smiley

Additional Rules and Details:

  • Craft your project during this challenge period (Sep 9 2013 - Oct 8 2013) only.  Projects created before this timeframe will be excluded from the voting poll.
  • On Oct 1 2013, there will be a special folder created for entries.  Post your entry on the specified entry board during the period of Oct 1 to Oct 8 11:59:59 PDT 2013.  No sooner.  No later.
  • Voting will happen from Oct 9 - Oct 16 2013.
  • The winner will be officially announced on the first business Monday of the next month -- in our November newsletter, on this thread and on the Craftster blog.  We will contact you via Private Message, after the announcement, to get your prize package information.
  • Enter only ONE project.  Your entry can have multiple components to it.
  • If cheating of any sort is discovered, the applicable entry and votes will be disqualified.

(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the Craftster Blog
(3) and a prize from us at Craftster.org -- any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

48  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Fruit Rainbow on: September 06, 2013 06:35:10 AM
Baby.sweets4ever started his first year of school this year and today is his day for Snack & Share.  They take a snack for the whole class and an item to share (like show & tell).  He took this rainbow for snack and one of his scavenger hunt collections for share.

Pretty self-explanatory, I think! Cheesy  Fruit rainbow, pot of "gold" fish crackers and mozzarella cheese slices.  I took two sizes of flower-shaped cookie cutters and bent them just a bit to make them more happy cloud-like.

Easy peasy!
