21  NEWS AND DISCUSSION ABOUT CRAFTSTER / Latest News / 01/31/14 - Craftster Best of 2013 announced! on: January 31, 2014 04:55:18 PM

Many, many thanks to everyone that shared amazing projects, advice and inspiration on Craftster in 2013.  As always, it was such a great year for our community, and we're so happy each of you shared a part in it!

Of course, choosing the "Best Of" is a fun, but very difficult task for us.  After all, all of the projects posted on Craftster are the best to us!  This is just a small sampling of what makes our community such a tremendous place to call home.  We all deserve major kudos for everything we've contributed to Craftster in the last year! Smiley

Once again, thank you! Kiss  And congrats to our Best of 2013!

22  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Fruit Salad Pirate Ship on: January 20, 2014 08:33:07 PM
Seriously having too much fun with preschool snack days.  I can't stop! Cheesy  Here's snack for tomorrow.

Pretty self-explanatory, I think.  I was super close to cooking and braiding spaghetti for mast roping, but controlled myself. Cheesy

I might need to make another for Talk Like a Pirate Day, haha!

23  HOME SWEET HOME / Crafty Housewares: Completed Projects: General / Family Birthday Calendar Tutorial on: January 17, 2014 09:00:08 PM

I made this for my mother-in-law for Christmas.  She had mentioned she saw one and loved it, and so it was born. Smiley

Supplies
Wooden plaque
Wooden nickels
Acrylic paint in two colors
Brush and spouncer sponge
Stencils
Letter stickers
Ceiling hooks
Open S hooks
Ribbon for hanging
Staple gun and staples
Permanent marker

Steps

Gather your supplies.

Apply two coats of paint to the wooden nickels and wooden plaque.

Center align and tape your FAMILY stencil to prepare for painting.

Using the spouncer, apply paint throughout your stencil.

On the bottom edge of the wooden plaque, measure and mark positions for ceiling hooks -- one for each month of the year.  Attach hooks.

Using ninja precision, align the itty bitty stickers above their corresponding hooks to mark the months.  I may or may not have used tweezers for this step.

Flip the wooden plaque over and, using your staple gun, attach the ribbon for hanging.  Tie the ribbon in a pretty little bow.

Drill holes in the wooden nickels.  I stacked 5 of them together, held them with a clamp and drilled them in batches to save some time.

Using the permanent marker, doodle the name and birth day of a family member on a wooden nickel.  One nickel per person.

Hang all of the birthdays on the calendar and bask in the awesomeness you've created. Smiley

Happy New Year!  This month, we have a very special challenge in store for you!  Instructables, an amazing site for sharing what you make, has provided a humongous prize package!  Not only will the first place winner get a prize this month, but nine other entries will as well! Shocked

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is New Year, New Uses!  Your challenge this month is to bring new life to an old object in your home.  The object could be a houseware piece, an item of clothing, home decor... anything you choose!  Your repurposing should transform the object into something entirely new and unexpected.  Perhaps you'll finally get to make a lamp out of that vintage, avocado green blender you've been hoarding all these years. Wink

Of course you can use other materials and supplies, new and old, to transform your item.  Your old item should be the star material of the show, though.

In your entry, submit at least two photos:  one before photo and one after photo.  Additional photos are encouraged, too! Smiley

Additional Rules and Details:

  • Craft your project during this challenge period (Jan 8 - Feb 10 2014) only.  Projects created before this timeframe will be excluded from the voting poll.
  • On Feb 3 2014, there will be a special folder created for entries.  Post your entry on the specified entry board during the period of Feb 3 to Feb 10 11:59:59 PDT 2014.  No sooner.  No later.
  • Voting will happen from Feb 11 - 18, 2014.
  • The winner will be officially announced on the first business Monday of the next month -- in our March newsletter, on this thread and on the Craftster blog.  We will contact you via Private Message, after the announcement, to get your prize package information.
  • Enter only ONE project.  Your entry can have multiple components to it.
  • If cheating of any sort is discovered, the applicable entry and votes will be disqualified.

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original, has never been posted on Craftster, or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, please give credit to that project. Smiley

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first AND second place winner (US or non-US) will get:

(1) an Instructables t-shirt and a copy of How to do Absolutely Everything
(2) their project in the Featured Projects area
(3) their project in the Craftster Blog
(4) and a prize from us at Craftster.org -- any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

EIGHT additional winners will also get an Instructables t-shirt!

28  COOKING / Recipes and Cooking Tips / Cucumber Christmas Trees on: December 16, 2013 07:36:19 AM
It's snack and share at preschool once again today.  baby.sweets4ever wanted to share his photos from Breakfast with Santa, so we made a complementary festive snack -- holiday trees! Smiley

Supplies
Wooden skewers
Cucumbers
Green apple
Star fruit (or a melon slice + a star cookie cutter!)
Optional "decorations" such as berries
Coconut flakes

Steps

Slice green apple in half.  Place one side, cut half down on a serving plate or tray.

Insert skewer into center of apple slice to create your tree trunk.  Make sure it's nice and straight.

Slice cucumber on an extreme diagonal.  Cutting diagonal slices will create longer branches for your tree. Smiley

Starting with the largest cucumber slices, thread the slices onto the wooden skewer.  Spread them out to create the base of your tree.

Keep threading slices onto the tree, using smaller slices as your tree gets taller.  This will naturally create the traditional pine tree shape for you.

When you get near the top, slice a star fruit to create your topper.  Top your tree with your star slice. Smiley  If you don't have star fruit available, you could use a cookie cutter to punch out a thick piece of cheese or slice of melon.

Decorate your tree!

Create simple garland with thread and berries, or use toothpicks to attach decorations.  I used thread to create blueberry garland.  I tied one end to the top of the skewer and the other end to a toothpick, which got jabbed into the cucumber branches near the bottom.

Set the scene with a sprinkling of coconut flake snow. Smiley

How cute would these trees be next to a gingerbread house?! Grin

And just for fun, here is one of the photos he wanted to share in class today.  Hard to believe baby.sweets4ever is over 5-years old now! Shocked

Let's bring in the New Year with our annual gingerbread house contest!  Each year, we've had so much fun seeing your gingerbread creations.  If this is your first year on Craftster, be sure to check out our previous years:  2012 entries, 2011 entries, 2010 entries and 2009 entries.

So, once again, it's time to get out those mixing bowls and get crafting!  Your challenge this month is to make and decorate a gingerbread house.  Any type of house is permitted (cottage, castle, etc.) as long as it has walls and a roof of gingerbread.  Your entry must be made of edible parts, but it's not limited to sweets only.  The only non-edible parts allowed are a base, lighting and/or electrical components.  No gingerbread house kits for this challenge.  No size restraints -- miniature to life-size houses are tasty and welcome for this challenge.

Additional Rules and Details:

  • Craft your project during this challenge period (Dec 2 2013 - Jan 8 2014) only.  Projects created before this timeframe will be excluded from the voting poll.
  • On Jan 1 2014, there will be a special folder created for entries.  Post your entry on the specified entry board during the period of Jan 1 to Jan 8 11:59:59 PDT 2014.  No sooner.  No later.
