1  HOME SWEET HOME / Exterior Decorating / Yard Art / Gardening: Discussion and Questions / Starbucks "Grounds for Gardens" on: July 10, 2014 05:26:55 PM
First of all, did you know it existed?  Ours recently just put up the sign, but apparently some of the locations have been doing it for years.  You ask and they give you a 5-lb bag of used grounds to use in your garden (free).

Which brings me to my question -- then what? Smiley  I know they are to be used as a fertilizer, but what exactly is the process?  Layer?  Till them in?  Teach me, oh wise gardeners. Smiley
2  CRAFTSTER CRAFT CHALLENGES / Craftster Craft Challenges / Craft Challenge #101 - Stash Buster - Entries Due Aug 1 - Aug 10 on: July 10, 2014 12:51:06 AM
Craft Challenge #101 - Stash Buster - Entries Due Aug 1 - Aug 10

So you've been hoarding all of those scraps of fabric, bits and baubles, huh?  You always think, "I need to keep this!  I might be able to use it someday!"  Well, your time as come. Grin

Your challenge this month is to only use supplies from your stash!  It's the great STASH BUSTER! Grin  You cannot buy, borrow, scavenge or trade for anything to use in your project.  No new supplies.  No new tools.  You can only use what is currently in your stash (or home) at this very moment.

Your project can be any method, size or creation you desire as long as it's created entirely from supplies, tools and items you already own.

Who's up to the challenge?

Additional Rules and Details:

  • Craft your project during this challenge period (Jul 10 - Aug 10 2014) only.  Projects created before this timeframe will be excluded from the voting poll.
  • On Aug 1 2014, there will be a special folder created for entries.  Post your entry on the specified entry board during the period of Aug 1 to Aug 10 11:59:59 PDT 2014.  No sooner.  No later.  Do not post your project elsewhere on Craftster.
  • Voting will happen from Aug 11 - Aug 18 2014.
  • The winner will be officially announced on the first business Monday of the next month -- in our September newsletter, on this thread and on the Craftster blog.  We will contact you via Private Message, after the announcement, to get your prize package information.
  • Enter only ONE project.  Your entry can have multiple components to it.
  • If cheating of any sort is discovered, the applicable entry and votes will be disqualified.

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original, has never been posted on Craftster, or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, please give credit to that project. Smiley

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first place winner (US or non-US) will get:

(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the Craftster Blog
(3) and a prize from us at Craftster.org -- any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

Guess what, guys!  This month means we've officially hosted 100 Craftster Craft Challenges! Grin  We're celebrating this amazing milestone with a crazy fun challenge and a $100 Amazon Gift card in addition to a gift from one of our Craftster shops!  Your challenge this month is to craft with 100 of...something!  Jelly beans, buttons, marbles, sequins, you name it!  Your 100 like items are totally up to you.

You can use other materials and supplies on your project, but your 100 items should be the star of the show.  100.  No more.  No less!  Your items should be like items (all buttons, all beans, etc.), but they do not have to be the same color or size.  For example, buttons could be a myriad of colors, shapes and sizes, but they all need to be buttons.

Maybe you'll embed 100 dyed piece of rice into resin coasters.  Maybe you'll create a necklace with 100 beads.  Maybe you'll create a centerpiece with 100 smooth stones.  What will you do?  We're so excited to see!

Additional Rules and Details:

  • Craft your project during this challenge period (Jun 4 - Jul 8 2014) only.  Projects created before this timeframe will be excluded from the voting poll.
  • On Jul 1 2014, there will be a special folder created for entries.  Post your entry on the specified entry board during the period of Jul 1 to Jul 8 11:59:59 PDT 2014.  No sooner.  No later.  Do not post your project elsewhere on Craftster.
  • Voting will happen from Jul 9 - Jul 16 2014.
  • The winner will be officially announced on the first business Monday of the next month -- in our August newsletter, on this thread and on the Craftster blog.  Kittykill will contact you via Private Message, after the announcement, to get your prize package information.
  • Enter only ONE project.  Your entry can have multiple components to it.
  • If cheating of any sort is discovered, the applicable entry and votes will be disqualified.

In honor of the amazing One Tiny Thing Swaps, be bring you the One Tiny Thing challenge part 2!  The idea is to make one tiny craft item.  It should be physically small (miniatures are encouraged) and should be something that you can craft with a high level of skill.  Even if it is a fairly simple/easy item for you to make, please embellish or perfect it so that it best represents your skill.  For example, if you wish to make a coin purse, we encourage you to embroider, add beading, or take other steps to make it a really special piece!

You can use any methods and materials of your choice to create your project.  Your entry must be 4"x4" or smaller.  It must be just one item and it must be tiny. Smiley

9  COOKING / Dessert / Earth Day Muffins with Free Printable Toppers on: April 22, 2014 08:11:54 AM
It's Snack & Share Day at baby.sweets4ever's school today and here's what we whipped up for the occasion!  They're super simple and a fun nod to Earth Day.

Supplies
Muffin mix
Food coloring
Cupcake liners
Toothpick

Toppers:
Cardstock
Printer
Scissors
Toothpicks
Washi tape

Steps

Mix your batter per package instructions.  I use a box muffin mix for his school muffins.  It's free of common allergens, really yummy and has a hint of vanilla.  Perfect for the kiddos.

Separate the batter into two bowls.  Add blue food coloring to one bowl and green to the other.  Mix thoroughly.

Sporadically layer the two colors into your cupcake liners.  I use an ice cream scoop for one and a Ziploc bag, with the corner snipped, for the other.  The bag allows me to direct the color easily.

Once all of your liners are nearly full, use a toothpick to swirl the color around on the top of each muffin.  This creates the swirls of land and water on top of the muffins.

Bake 'em!

While your muffins are baking, create your toppers.  On a piece of white 8x11.5" cardstock, print these free toppers I created for you.  Click the link or image below for the full-size print.  Save and print it.  They are also attached at the bottom of this post. Smiley

You can use a 2" punch to remove them or just snip them out with scissors. Smiley

Use a small piece of washi or clear tape to attach your snazzy toppers to toothpicks.

World muffffins!

Stab them with the toppers. Smiley

Enjoy!

10  OCCASIONS AND HOLIDAYS / Easter / Magic Beans on: April 19, 2014 05:05:14 PM
We do this tradition with baby.sweets4ever every year.  With Easter being tomorrow, I thought I'd share photos from last year's harvest. Smiley

You will need:
One [very excited] child
Magic jelly beans
A lollipop
A shovel

In his Easter morning egg hunt, he finds magic beans in a variety of colors.

Later that day, before his nap, he plants the beans. Smiley

Upon waking in the evening, the beans have sprouted. Wink

Happy Easter! Smiley
